You don't think that crossdressers have baggage? Seriously. Many are would-be TS would are too depressed and feel they are too hideous to transition. I think there are many categories of Cross dressers just as there are different types of Transsexuals.

In both communities there are huge differences amongst members, say for instance in the TS community someone like Allanah and someone like me. And its the same in the Cross dressing world. In fact I think that there are larger differences based on when a person transitions than anything else. I just never identified as a man. I started refusing manhood when I was young, and then I transitioned, so I just don't see my experience as the same as say Jamie (who I think is totally rad) who did live a good portion of her adult life as a man.

Generalizations are shoddy ways of pitting one group of people against another. I personally have no problem with cross dressers, except for when they cross my boundaries and become obsessive, which is a problem I have with anyone, including older TS who are jealous of my "natural beauty" whatever the fuck that means.

Anyways, like was already mentioned many "cross dressers" are just TS that haven't shored up the courage to take the plunge, for one reason or another. A friend of mine if going through the process right now, she's been dressing up for years, and if you meet her, you can instantly tell she's not a man, but she's in a real bind, because she's in her early fifties and if she transitions she will never be young and pretty, and she will very likely lose her spouse and home (which oh my god if you saw the home she built...)

Thank you so much for that post, Mandy. I only wish the entire TG community shared your compassion and level-headedness.

For some of us (quite a few, actually), it's not a matter of courage or the lack thereof. Many of us came to this rather late in life, after we had already built lives that involve loved ones, careers and community involvement, all of which we would traumatize and put at risk if we selfishly followed our own muse as far as we'd like. And so we seek a balance as best we can. IMO, there is too much self-centeredness in the TG world as it is.

I love TSs, but I don't idolize them. I see a lot of downside to full transition in this culture we live in, and I worry about their welfare, now and as they grow older. That's empathy on my part, not judgment. I just wish we could all respect and love each other. Lord knows we all get enough dissing from the rest of the world.

JamesHunt, we TS's have plenty of issues but we eventually face it and not want to be in the darkness of the night like many of the crossdressers, and we all should respect their decision of keep it that way for whatever reasons they have. I don't know. When I lived in Philly there was a thriving community of people who were into gender fuck, much more so than Portland. Probably because Philly is such a tense town, that people really need to stick together. On the east coast, I always felt like shit was gonna go down any time I walked down the street. But I think that has more to do with the concentration of poverty, the loss of industry, and the general frustration that accompanies those things. Plus the weather is much harsher in Philly/Boston/New York than it is in the PNW. So people are cold all winter and then hot and miserable all summer, whereas out here the weather is pretty damn nice, the trees and mountains are beautiful, and people are less crowded.

But generalizations are kind of worthless, after all I've had more friends gay bashed and beat up in SF than anywhere else. I've had times in Oakland that I felt much less safe than say Nashville or Atlanta.
