Since this sounds rather timely. LOL

If you were asked.. What would be your reason/s (motivations?) for wanting to become a MOD?

Perks, popularity, celebrity status, first pickings off the litter, spying on people, power, control, dominance, greed etc.

Discuss!! LOL

As a mod on some technical board I must agree on it...I`m facing a people with lack of domestic education/coaching - it`s drives me mad...

I've modded for a few forums over the years, and DJ Asia's sentiment is largely my own. Plus, I didn't like people brown-nosing me and whining in PMs over stupid stuff. If I were to do it again, it'd have to have the GameFAQs.com approach where if you become a mod, you mod as little or as much as you want (they have so many mods on that site that there's always someone to do the job).

Power: the ability to "vote people off the island" unilaterally appeals to me. HA mods complain about getting too many frivolous pms complaining about others. If I were mod I'd allow everyone only one pm a month. If that number were exceeded the offender would be immediately banned for life. That would certainly cut down on my work load as mod. :>)

Hmmmmmmmmmmm let's see
the acclaim of meeting a bunch of people and interacting with folks who share the same interest

the absence of any free time once you're a mod and off work because the phone and/or IM program never stops ringing or beeping

putting up with every John or Jane Doe who wants to know why they were banned, forgetting that they might have done something to warrant it

deleting 100's upon 100's of pics people call you or IM you about because some idiot photographer chose to not edit their work, but just post it on a site anyone can register and access and possibly exploit

receiving nasty text or voice messages because you did something on a 'website' that someone did not agree with, not money stolen, not a murder, not a hit & run via a vehicle: a fucking action on a website

getting calls from chicks or IM's from chicks that threaten to call the government on you about your website because some idiot posted a pic up of some one underaged and were to upset to simply ask for it's deletion

hmmmmmmmm, the list goes on & on
those are some of the reasons it's great to be a mod

Advice to JWBL: when you go to bed disconnect your phone and Ipod. After waking up and having your morning coffee reconnect them. Your problem is you're too nice to people.

Hmmm... we get yelled at, accused of siding with people... I think you have to be a little masochistic to want to be a mod :)

The power? We get to ban people, or in my case, tell the admin to ban people. Then we get yelled at, accused of siding with people, and so on.

A thankless job indeed. :)

I'm a mod or admin on a number of forums, mostly in other areas. Mostly I do very little mod action and a lot more behind the scenes admin stuff. Like Kalina, I'm a mod at tgirltalk.com, and because the regular posters (who, like at most forums, account for about 1% of the registered users) form a small, fairly close-knit community (most of the time), there's usually not much to moderate (though we do see the occasional troublemaker who needs discipline or even banning, it's very rare). Mostly I do admin stuff (help with passwords, effect changes to the forum code, alter the allowed sizes of avatars, that sort of thing).

I wouldn't want to be a mod here, I simply would not have time for it and my hat's off to Thanos, NYCe, and JWBL for the excellent job they do as mods.

Quinn
01-03-2008, 06:01 PM
Speaking as someone who has done it, I can honestly say that, from a cost-benefit standpoint, there's no compelling reason to do it again. Much respect to anyone who can moderate the endless, petty nonsense that goes on in even the best intended of forums.

I think the Mods do a great job here...and you can see what a thankless job it is by reading NYCe's location. People bitching for bannings, the chat is down, the flood of new members with their 'why can't I ...' questions, the slight insults that result in a blizzard of PM's complaining, flame wars that could get out of hand, threatened legal action over questionable pics, the list could continue.

NYCe, Johnny and Hollywood do an excellent job keeping a balanced approach to all this BS.

Thanks.

Well, let's see...The 'perks' to being a Mod:

1. Consant aggrevation.
2. Whining people.
3. Bitchy people.
4. Constant aggrevation.
5. Loss of personal time.
6. Loss of sleep.
7. Personal attacks because you didn't do it their way.
8. Constant aggrevation.
9. No pay.
10. Regulating imposters.
11. "I'm leaving 'cause I'm not appreciated her!"
12. Oh, did I mention, Constant Aggrevation!?

Feel free to add.

All of our mods, specifically JWBL, NYCe and Hollywood, do a tremendously, thankless job. They are the reason the forum hasn't burst into flames. I would not do what they "Volunteer" to do for all the tea in china. Gentlemen, thank you for the effort you put into keeping this site going. I would not blame either of you, one bit, should you decide to check out. Thanks again!

To me being a moderator is like being on a Spec Ops teams. The job you do is valuable and very much neccessary. But no one can know of it. And becuase of that, No matter how great a task you accomplish, No one will ever pat you on the back....or get a handshake from the president. Its one of those things where you have to be ABSOLUTELY comfortable with YOUR very own self achievements. Moderator is very similar. You do a hella of a job that people really dont see. And MOST DO NOT wanna see.

If you are ok with the accomplishments you make in life, without the praise and applaude from others. Then I think it would be a perfect qualification to become a reason to be Moderator.

JWBL....NYCe...Etc. These are fine gentlemen. And they know it. Hell, Most of us KNOW it also! If you want an examples of the before mentioned qualities and certifications of the before mentioned topic, Start with them.

I am the type of person for which believes that WHATEVER I am apart of, I can contribute and try my damndest to help make better. I have always wanted to be a mod for the Hung Angel forum. I was always told that if ya didnt live in NYC....or go to Allanah's Party, You could pretty much hang it up. I do not know how truthful that is, prolly not much, But whatever.

If I ever do get a chance to mod here...Then kicks ass! I'm gunna do my goddamndest to make this place tolerable for me and EVERYONE else here. And If not....oh well.

Kisses,

Izzy

Being a mod is great: everyone hates you, you get your real name, home and work addresses, websites, photos, phone numbers outed all over the internet (especially on CL), people think they can call you all sorts of shit.... It's a real party.

I have had nothing but good dealings with the mods here but I don't understand why they do it. It just seems like such a pain in the ass dealing with all the pissing and moaning. I appreciate you guys and realize we wouldn't have a message board if it wasn't for the mods.

Last thing; I do like your laid back style of letting things work themself out as opposed to excessive deleting and banning. I've belonged to other boards where you had to walk around on eggshells afraid of being banned just for speaking your mind. In saying that, there are also people here who have the intention of being jerks that I am happy to see go.

To all the mods, BRAVO! You perform a thankless job, herding a bunch of dweebs, morons, assholes, and wannabes.

To those that invited me to join your honored crowd: FUCK YOU VERY MUCH! :!:

While I really do appreciate the consideration, I'm already bursting blood vessels with my 'real life' stresses.

While I am surely honored with the offer, what the fuck were you thinking? Were you on drugs?

Umm...On further consideration, is there free booty?

I agree with this. Of all the forums I have participated in, the Mods here are some of the best, especially considering the huge traffic. JW, HB, NYCE... great job.

Advice to members: If you really want to show appreciation to the Mods here, then think 2, 3, 5, 10 times before hitting that "submit" button on a PM. Is your concern so huge that you really need to send it?

(note: the above advice probably doesn't apply if you're offering free TS sex to the Mods via PM)

I wanted to thank everyone who even thought about complementing us mods on here for doing the job. I've said it before but you can't really say it enough, it's a grueling job.

Those of us who are steady with the moderation of this site will continue to do so with the energy we often find depleted after receiving numerous pm's, IM's, text messages, or pidgeons with notes attached sent to us.

I certainly didn't RAISE the subject to lobby and become a mod unlike some people. I do NOT need to butter up all the male moderators to give such thoughts any consideration.

I RAISED the subject simply because I am just FUCKING SICK of some people (if you feel guilty..YES I am pointing my finger at YOU!) because all they ever do is fucking WHINE and CRITICIZE something good that others have done. E.G. The GABBLY CHATROOM. I've been hearing it SUCKS etc. etc, since it started out but then again when I log on in there I see the same loser who seems to be logged on there every fucking night. It's Pathetic! Or rather YOU are pathetic. So let's keep the issue strictly on that and that alone ONLY!

No wonder a lot of folks don't like you. Not that it matters to you but somehow..when you seems to be butting heads with the multitude one must stop and think that maybe there is really something SICKLY WRONG with you. I got no time to argue but this FAggy drama has gone on for quite a long time and NONE even bothered saying ANYTHING about it so I feel that I MUST.

Anyways, with all the drama and crap that has happened lately on here I'm sure I'm NOT alone left feeling disappointed.

The gabbly chatroom I made because I do mean well. I thought creating such chatroom where everyone here on HA could have a chat IN REAL TIME in addition to just counter posting eachother would result in better camaraderie here at the forum but I guess I miscalculated and wrongly assume such positivity could ever come off it.

JWBL, That was such a sweet gesture coming from you. But I'd like you to know that I am NOT talking to you or any other mods (NYCe, HollywoodBuckstrap, Mega, Allanah etc.) to sweet talk my ways and charm you guys for me to be elected as a mod. I talk to you and other people I like because I GENUINELY like you as a person. If I don't (in your case JWBL) then we wouldn't even get to a point to exchanging YIM handles, cellphone and landline numbers. ;)

With that said, that is simply me being ME and not putting up a fake sweet girlie girlie facade to manipulate people into getting what I want for I am simply NOT that type of girl.

I will however send any mod a PM if something bothers me and or If I needed help with something or someone (assholes).

well, I am breaking my new years resolution now just to say the following:

Hara, the gabbly chat is cool, and I had a few nice chats with a lot of good people. And if a few people complain.....that shouldnīt bother you, bc the big majority of chatters most definitley like the room. There is a saying around my lowlands: "people who complain buy" 8)

And now that it seems to be working very well again (seems the gabbly tech folx returned from their holidays) I donīt see a reason not to use it.

Never been there, but if it`s open type CR - what did you expect?
Lots of people (so fragile type of) deals with a lots of problem without being able to solve any of them - so they must project their anger somewhere else...that day it happen to be your room, tomorrow will be another and so on...
The point is if you giving something away don`t expect anything in return, it hurts less. By creating CR for someone consider creating distance/gap for you - be above it, be a real MOd :)

Take care, honey! Kiss

You're all welcome! So let's enjoy gabbly as much as we can and just think that it's a kewl way of chatting to girls and guys you like. Some still might say it sucks but then don't even go there and chat. Because you only look like a FOOL criticizing it and being there nightly. With that said, enjoy the chatroom while you still can and it's there!
