and for anybody else that wants to understand more about American Football & especially what a Steelers fan (like me) is.
This is an NFL Films presentation by Steve Sabol. Sit back, crack open an Iron City beer and enjoy. 22 min. long but well worth the time.

That was pretty good. When I first saw the thread, I thought "some bastard's hating on me in the sports lounge now!"

They sound like a good team and their fans seem extremely loyal. I still don't have a clue about the rules, ect but I'll pick it up as I go along.

Just tell me what are the rules when it comes to takling. Can you just take the ball out of their hands? And can you only throw forwards?

LOL ...............No hatin' here NR. Though I understand your trepidation, I've seen the shit flyin' around & at you elsewhere.

As far as tackling goes, yes you can "strip" the ball out of a player's hands. It used to be very prevailent back in the "old days", like the '70s. Used to be, one defender would grab you and another would try and rip the ball from your hands. The Cincinnati Bengals were doing it to Willie Parker (The Steelers starting running back) the whole game this past Sunday. Though once you are "down by contact", meaning a defender touches you and you then hit the ground, the play is dead.

Actually yes, you can throw a backward pass.
NFL RULES: Backward Pass

1. Any pass not forward is regarded as a backward pass. A pass parallel to the line is a backward pass. A runner may pass backward at any time.
2. A backward pass that strikes the ground can be recovered and advanced by either team.
3. A backward pass caught in the air can be advanced by either team.
4. A backward pass in flight may not be batted forward by an offensive player.
5. If the backward pass is complete and the receiver is in or behind the neutral zone, the receiver may in turn throw a forward pass.
6. Unlike a forward pass, if a backward pass hits the ground or an official, play continues. Like a fumble, a backward pass that has hit the ground may be recovered by either side. In NFL rules a backward pass other than the snap, if muffed by a receiver before it first touches the ground the ball becomes dead if an opponent recovers it after it touches the ground.

Hope this helped. Do you get much of a chance to watch American Football over there? If you go to youtube.com and punch in NFL or Steelers, or something of the sort, they have some good little vids. NFLs Greatest Hits is fun to watch, alot of old stuff when the rules weren't anywhere near as strict and you could slam guys. Check it out, ask anything you want to know and I'll try to get back with some info.
Later..............

A nice site to give you the basic rules of an arcane game.

http://www.football.com/rulesandinfo.html

Put on the Black and Gold, grab a beer and love the Steelers.

Cheers guys, you've convinced me that the Steelers are the team to go for.

It does seem like a complicated game but I suppose you learn as you watch. There are games on Sky Sports in UK, but I don't watch that often because I didn't know what was going on. The next game I watch I'll have an idea of the rules and will enjoy it a lot more.

What are the rules on kicking during play, can you kick it stright from your hands? Can you kick it through the posts from open play also?

Thanks

The Steelers play the Pats at Foxbourgh, Massachucetts 12/9/07 4:15 start time on EST in the US. Hope it's televised over there (Scotland I believe your at), it should be a good one.

Try this site NR, has some good info, though some of it might be a little confusing since you don't really understand the basics.

http://football.calsci.com/TheRules9.html

Kicking it from your hands is a punt. Usually occurs on 4th down if a 1st down was not successful. You achieve a 1st down every time the ball travels at least 10 yards downfield (completed pass or running attempt).
Although, a player can drop kick the ball through the goal posts for 3 points at any time during play. I think that's right. It doesn't happen very often at all.

And NR, as far as loyalty goes, Steelers fans are the true essence of the root word FANatic. Just about any major city you go to in the USA you can find a "Steelers" bar. I don't believe that can be said of any other NFL franchise in the league.
Check out this state by state list from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette:

http://www.post-gazette.com/steelers/steelerbars_list.asp

The Steelers might not always win, but they're not loyal to the city and us, and we're loyal to them. As I heard a guy say before SB XL..."If your born in Pgh. your a Steelers fan for life, that's the deal"

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO

And if it helps....I'm part Scots also, there's alot of use in Western PA. Pgh is also one of the most ethnicly diverse cities in the US.
Large neighborhoods of Scots/Irish, German, Polish, Italian, you name it we got it and everybody around here celebrates their heritage proudly and also as one.

Sorry, that should say..............."They ARE loyal to the city and us"........

That's like the soccer team I support (Manchester United). They are fanatics and there are United bars across the UK. By the way I'm from Northern Ireland, I should've cleared that up. Thanks for taking the time to provide me with this info, it's much appreciated man.

Oooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh haze,

You poor man, rootin' for the Cryboys. I'm afraid you're beyond hope.

But seriously, you guys are just as die hard as us Black & Gold fans and I for one would love to see the old rivalry get some new life. Those were good times (well, for the Steelers at least)!! I'm really hoping that the Brown get rejuvinated, I miss the days when the AFC Central was "The Shit" Steelers, Browns, & Oilers (the Bengals always sucked). It sure was fun watchin' the Steel Curtain stop Earl Campbell in his tracks (I remember watching him get like 13 yds total one game) and then the NFL having to create a flack jacket for Pastorini because we always broke his ribs!!   Aaaaahhhhh memories!!
I only have 2 questions........
#1. Has Cliff Harris gotten up off the ground yet from when Lambert threw him there? and...
#2. Just exactly how much did Jerry Jones pay Neil O'Donnell to throw those 2 picks in SBXXX?

There is NO DOUBT that last pick was bought and payed for. The first one was just a cover to make everybody believe that it "could" happen again.

Oh, and #3. How did it feel to have more Steelers fans than Cowboys fans in your own backyard? I mean that's pretty bad, you guys couldn't make your way through New Mexico and we found our way clean across the country.............. :smh :smh :smh
Later dude. HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO
