Maybe it's just ignorance, but I come from a real working-class background myself where fear of the "strange" could have easily been commonplace... but perhaps strangely, it never was.

Fear of the different, of the unknown leads the small mind to do (and say) strange things. An open, educated mind is a great thing, it can lead people to amazing discoveries about themselves and the world we live in. Guys like q1 are, as you said, afraid of anything outside of their comfort zone. I don't think it's ignorance,I think they don't want to understand.
