The old guy that would tell customers "Please don't squeeze the Charmin" bought the farm today. For some reason I thought he died like 20 years ago. Anyway, R.I.P. Old Timer.

I always thought The Great Santini would be the best pitchman for toilet paper. He'd pull you out of a stall by the ankles and kick your ass if you only wiped twice.

I loved The Great Santini! What a great '60's Dad' story.
I remember a parody of Mr. Whipple squeezing a sex doll in some skin rag when I was a boy...cracked me up at the time. He was standing behind it in ecstacy and people were saying, "MR. WHIPPLE!"

Thanks for the news flash. While I do feel for the old timer, I now have a reason to cringe as I clean myself following dropping a deuce the next few days.

As I read this I have to admit I do not understand the tone in which you memorolize him.

This man was one of the finest actors of our generation. Sure he didn't succumb to the pressure of selling out and doing some vapid "hollywood Blockbuster" but instead he chose to master his craft and go with what his nose knows; crappy crap paper crapola.

Let this be a lesson to you all: remain true to yourselves and no matter what anyone else says, always sqeeze the Charmin of life.

I'm sorry I told myself I wouldn't cry

Did he ever make it on "Inside the Actors Studio" with James Lipton? James Lipton would ask him toilet paper questions for 6 hours.

James reveiled they knew each other as children and made a pact.

Whoever made it in hollywood first would help the other.
alas.........they both made it.

I told myself I wouldn't cry

This means that you are young. Everyone in America with a tv knew those commercials. His gentle image in those was ripe for parody.

In my favorite joke a comedian used that image to say that his neighborhood was tough. He said that he walked in to a grocery store and saw two clerks; one was holding a man while the other was punching him. The one punching was saying a word with each punch: I Told you not to squeeze the Charmin! (Don's classic commercial line.)

In order for the joke to be funny, you had to have an image of those Charmin commercials in your mind. The comedian didn't have to mention Don Wilson or the Charmin commercial, cause everyone knew the image.

Don had other roles before, particularly on television, but his Mr. Whipple is an American Icon, and a classic example of a successful marketing idea.

Mr. Whipple is dead? Actually, I just assumed he had died years ago. Still sucks, though.

Talking about death, the guy from my local Fish and Chip shop just died (yes I am from the UK lol)..........Apparently when it came to the funeral they had to ask his family if they wanted him open or rapped. Don't worry I'm here all week!

The british people will get it

I'm American so let me have a guess. Does "Open or Wrapped" mean "For Here or To Go"? You guys in the UK ever ask for a "Doggie Bag" when you want a "To Go Container"?

The "Where's the Beef Lady" died relatively soon, a couple of years, after she made her mark. I believe she wasn't an actor & was sighted & signed. She enjoyed her late stardom & left the $$ for her grandkids' college funds.

Yep, you’ve got it. All people who work in Chip Shops here say one of two things, apart from telling you the price that is............."You want salt and vinegar on that" and "Open or Wrapped" as our fish and chips are just basically wrapped in paper or shitty old newspapers.

Thanks, apart from me being a retard and spelling W"rapped" wrong, duh  It is quite a funny little anecdote, even if I say so myself!
