For the last few years I have devolved from cooking my own meals to living on about 75% free catered food, supplemented by sandwiches, cereal and fast food. My recent food poisoning has a silver lining: I now think that my crappy diet, while economical, comes at too high a price: my overall sense of feeling good. So, armed with tomorrow's paycheck, I'm going to buy some lentils, cookbooks, and fancy kitchen shit. J/K....seriously, give me your suggestions on healthy meals. I cannot keep living on bread, meat and cheese.
I think, looking at myself a bit more objectively than Vaniity seems to be able to hear herself, that I'm turning into this version of Tom Hanks:
No wonder the women that want to bump uglies with me look more like my mother than Angelina J.

congrats suckseed

as I wrote in our food poisoning thread, I had to radically change my diet due to my gallbladder troubles. and it was one of the best things in my entire life in the long run.

actually its surprising and sad at the same time when u look at what people tend to think is important in their lives. their wardrobe, cars, holidays, but most dont give a damn what they actually put into themselves.

best wishes for those plans u got in the field of nutrition :D

Congrats on changing your life for the better Suckseed. Eating healthy is the way everyone should go in my opinion. There's been numerous studies on fast food and fat content found in the food. The studies all confirm that fast food and its fat content can lead to depression and mental health concerns along with poor physical health. Keep in mind that most of the food poisoning cases due happen in the home though. Cross contamination can occur at anytime. Don't put meats in the same bag as produce. Don't put meat on the top racks in the fridge and leave produce exposed with coverage. There's a ton more examples I can go on about. If you google in home food poisoning you'll get lots of links.

Yeah, as I said I found out that human feces contamination is the most likely culprit...not what you want to read as you try to keep your apple juice down.
I was picturing the Taco Bell guy scratching his ass as he wrapped my burrito all day. Yeech.

Bah. I leave for a few hours and you people got nuthin'.
C'mon people. Do I have to start living on stirfrys and brown rice? I seem to remember Seanchai once said...or maybe it was DJ Asia...that he starts the day with oatmeal with a little wheat germ on top...sounds delicious. It's just that when i go shopping, everything looks like it's shit in terms of being healthy. Bread, pasta, cheeses, beer, processed food, frozen dinners, pizza, deli. I buy bags of salad that rot and pears that go soft. Then buy Taco bell when there's nothing to eat. Do I start spending $80 on boxes of protein shake mix from GMC? The turkey and cheese sandwich on whole wheat with avocado is starting to sound pretty good right now. I have to go to work. When I come back, I want all my dietary problems solved. Hop to it!

Hi Suckseed,

Good for you. I really hope you stick with it. I know alot about food and nutrition and yet do not always follow.

I would say drink TONS of water and find a few "body flushers" at the health food stores. To start a new.

Then............

Stock up on lentils, beans, whole grains, and if you are near a Korean market, they have a great deal of fresh inexpensive produce usually really fresh.

But chicken breasts when they are on sale. Cut up 10 Pounds of them. Put half a pound in zip lock bags and freeze them for whenever you want to do a stir fry. Every time you get a strong urge for junk or fast food, drink a TALL glass of water and eat a few carrot sticks.

This is good advice froma guy who ate 7 kit kats on halloween. LOL. I felt like I was going to die. I felt like pure shit.

Get lots of leafy greens. Eat chicken and fish, tofu if you can stand it.
Make soups, stews, foods that you can eat for three days.

I really hope you stick to it and feel great in no time. Bon Appetite

No diet is good unless it's balanced. Make sure you eat lots of fish, chicken, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, fruit and a small amount of red meat (if any). Chocolate and sweets (or candy i think u call it) are all ok in moderation.

Crisps (potato chips i think) are one of the worst things for you and if you can't do without them buy them cooked in sunfour oil. (i only know all this because my mum's a fitness freak)

As for drinks try and stay away from fizzy drinks and drink at least 8 glasses of diluted juice or water a day.

You'll be a picture of health in no time.

:)

If they're anything like the service monkeys around here, he was probably scratching his arse with the burrito!

Don't know about healthy shit, but, for breakfast, you can't beat a grilled spam, saurkraut and chilli sauce sandwich...Sets you up for the day.

I just live off stews, that I cook with a slow cooker.

It really is a doddle, just buy loads of veg & your favourite meat, chop it all up, sling it all in b4 u go to bed, add a cup of water & some stock, and it's ready for the following day, they're easy to clean aswell.

I myself always do as clean of a diet as I can, especially since I am into body building and stuff.

some of the best stuff, especially for your abs, are:

Almonds and other nuts,
Beans and other Legumes,
Spinich and othr greens,
Dairy,
Oatmeal,
Eggs,
Turkey, and other lean meats, such as lean steaks, chicken and fish;
Peanut Butter,
Olive Oil,
WHOLE GRAIN breads and cereals,
and berries such as raspberries and so on.

Also, Whey protein...especially whey protein isolate, is another good thing to have and have often.

I have a general rule, I eat healthy during the week, I mean vegetables, fruit and salads everyday, muesli for breakfast. Then on the weekends I junk out hard, Pizzas, fries, burgers, kebabs, fizzy drinks, burrito's, tacos, all that shit. It works for me, but then again I am an exercise freak :)

I too have had food poisoning suckseed and I sympathize fully, I got salmonella from an undercooked egg and it was probably the worst few days of my life. I didn't eat an egg for three years and couldn't even think about them without feeling sick.

As long as I eat healthy during the week I don’t feel bad about eating junk food on the weekend, I’m sure this wouldn’t work for everyone but it’s nice when you get to the weekend, you almost feel like you have earnt that big greasy kebab on a friday night after the pub

Hi Suckseed,

Stock up on lentils, beans, whole grains, and if you are near a Korean market, they have a great deal of fresh inexpensive produce usually really fresh.

Oh man, just weeks ago I bought some of this Korean stuff called "Kim-Chi". It's the best. Basically it's marinated cabbage with red peppers. So goooood.

For you health specialists, is it bad if you only eat veggies and pasta? I don't eat meat not because of some philosophy but because it makes me tired, cept for that occasional Sirloin of course.

Well, I knew a guy who did that, and his cholesterol went way up from the carbohydrate overdose. Make sure it's whole grain pasta.....also....if you combine several grains and beans, you get a complete protein....i think there's even a biblical reference to it somewhere.

I suggest whey protein isolate for your protein needs as well. Cause lack of protein will REALLY make you feel bad.

OK, suckseed...Here's my suggestion. Go get a copy of a book called "Eat to Win", by Dr. Robert Haas. Whether you are into sports or not, this book addresses lifestyle, activity, and most importantly diet(with menus & recipes), key to an active health regimen. I've been using this book as a guideline since 1983, while I was an active-duty specwar operator. I retired in 1993, and realized it was even more important to pay more attention to my health and fitness, as I was not as active, on a daily basis, anymore. Plus, add in the "getting older" factor!! Give it a try...

Altho I never met a cheeseburger I didn't like, I'm suffering a diet related malady all this week, gout (God ....it's painful) & having another foxhole conversion:

The real oatmeal, not Quaker or instant, McCann's Irish here in the States, is a totally different animal than the other mush, quite delish actually, add fruit.
On the same ethnic skew a real Greek/Mediterranean yogurt with some fruit or honey ( or hiney!) is completely better than the factory made yogurts I get bored with. Here in NYC Total yogurt is sorta available.

Tonight after work I made some guacamole, got a small rice at the Chinese take out, boiled up a can of spanish style pinto beans in sauce, fried some onions & red bell pepper & put all into a tortilla for a satisfying veggie burrito.

I'm also completely into a meal of hummus, baba ganoush, olives, chopped salad, feta, pita & red wine. Or a good homemade soup (split pea, lentil) with a greek style salad.

Not a veggie but none of these leaves me feeling deprived at all.
Dates for dessert.
