what do you take?

Cold Beer.
The wetness settles down any pollen left in back out mouth.
The cold soothes sore throats and sinus.
The alchol numbs the nerves which usually re-irritate themselves.
Would suggest something clean and crisp and non-American. Becks is a good bet as is Stella Artois.
seanchai
Alternatively, go to the beach - no pollen there - bring the beer with you!

I'd have to agree, beer is indeed a cure-all for nearly any ailment or infliction.
The only side effects I've ever encountered are occasional problems near the end of the night involving gravity and common sense, but ya can't have everything.
Hey, at least I don't have allergies.

I take loratadine (generic Claritin), Minor Bluegreen Dragon Formula (Chinese herbs), acupuncture, and as seanchai suggests some liberal libation at times (there are some very fine microbrews here in New England, which >>almost<< rival the best real ales in the UK, which have been my favorites for 25 years: do you know these, seanchai? Caledonia Cream Ale, Wadworth's Ushers Ruby and 6x?). Unfortunately, New England beaches are a) too cold this time of year, and b) still riddled with pollen unless a sea breeze is blowing onshore (which, again, is too cold this time of year).

I'll have an American beer, Budweiser or Bud Light. If I got allergies I'll blow my nose.

i've tried claritin, claritin d, allegra, nadelcon, drixoral, tylenol allergy, bottomline is when you have an allergy attack none of that shit works, best thing I ever bought was Nasaline, they sell it at Duane Reade; it's a nasal rinse that works by you holding the extremely large bottle of saline solution to your nostril and flushing out the junk...........
$12 and I forgot how much for the refills

JohnnyWalkerBlackLabel

tub, that tylenol severe allergy worked better than I thought it would
in the end though it wasn't strong enough for my sinus infection, so antibiotics were needed

Long time allergy sufferer here and I've found some chinese herbs that are working better than any prescription meds I've ever taken and I've tried everything. Only problem is the label is in chinese but for the nyc people you can buy these pills at:
Kamwo herbal pharmacy
211 Grand St.
ny,ny
It is a plastic pouch of 20 pills for $6
you take 2 pills twice a day
that is all the info I can give since I don't read chinese
JWBL try them and let me know how they work. I have zero allergy symptoms when I take these pills.

JWBL, you're right about acupuncture: my acupuncturist has arrested a full-bore sinus attack on the spot. Problem is, although she can desensitize me to a degree, it never lasts very long.
A couple of weeks ago I had one of my 2x or 3x a year sinus eruptions which are simply insufferable: eyes weeping, red, and almost closed, and nose running so badly that a box of Kleenex lasts only a few hours. I went to my doctor, and he prescribed Singulair, thinking that since I wasn't responding well to the anti-histamine drugs, the leukotryene (whatever they are) blocker might work. Well, wouldn't you know that the BCBS (Blue Crap Bull Shit) health plan that my wife pays $8000 a year for won't cover Singulair--even with a physician's override. So I'm using Astelin. Hate the shite; tastes horrible and makes my nose feel runny for the next half hour or so, but it does seem to work.
Thing is, I'll go for weeks, even in high season, with only minor allergy reactions, but every so often I get these horrendous attacks, and the only thing that seems to really work is sleeping it off. It's like the worst cold you can imagine--but it's over in 24 hours.
My father-in-law, RIP, the finest MD I've ever known, used to give me an injection once a year which would carry me over through the whole season. I don't know what he used, but my doctor said most likely it was a steroid concoction: there's little evidence to support it, but somehow it did seem to work.

I'm going through it now, like you I've had them all of my life so now I know how to control them a bit better
1. I don't go out in the daytime I keep the office closed, blinds shut and the humidifier full on heavy allergy days I know about ahead of time.
2. I keep at home and at work that $12 NasalAire shit from Duane Reade. It works wonders...............
3. On off days I only go out when it gets dark, sunlight and allergies are a wicked tag team.
4. Those nasal strips I mentioned. Can't live without them.
and last but not least
5. 3 of those flexible ice packs in the freezer to put on my eyebrows when I start burning up due to that oncoming allergy attack.

Some good ideas there, JW. I've never tried the ice packs or the nasal strips. I run the highest grade microfilter HEPA filters on our furnace (which is also the central air conditioning system) and change it frequently. One of my problems--which I'm loathe to admit--is our two longhaired cats. Love them, but I know their dander and the dust they kick up from the litter aggravates me to no end. They're 12 or 13 years old now, so I'm going to just live with them until they've passed on, then no more housecats for this guy.

Good grief, this thread got bumped back from ancient times. The only allergy I ever had (or reaction or whatever) was when I was kid. White chocolate use to make me break out in hives. I'm not sure if it still does or not, because I stopped eating it.
Weird, eh?

I brought the thread back up because it didn't make sense to start a new one, I knew I'd spoken about it before, figured I'd save some space on the server, ya know? White chocolate has that effect on me too, drives me nuts, because I love white chocolate (except for Vicki Richter's white chocolate, but thats another story)
I started using visine a month ago and it's helped tremendously so far. Other than that, I take a Tylenol sinus every once in a while and drink plenty of hot tea. So far so good. If I have any problems after this post, I'm blaming you JWBL for jinxing me! *LOL*
I forgot about eyedrops, I hate putting anything in my eyes but my allergist gave me these eyedrops which worked wonders, so add that to the list, hope I don't jinx ya Myst, lol

Heh. I guess that could be another allergic reaction I have on occasion. Logging on HA and thinking "I wonder if Blondie is beating up some poor, defenseless forum member?" Then I get a nervous eye twitch type thing.
Then I go eat lunch.
