You should be fine unless you're trying to be a pirate. Yes, you can use an external drive, I don't see why you would think otherwise. If you're worried about viruses, use linux (or a Mac). Ubuntu is a very user friendly linux distro. It's pretty difficult to get a virus on a linux box. There's a humorous post on the subject of linux viruses. It's around here somewhere.
That said, if you have such a passion for them why don't you try to get to know one on a personal level as opposed to a masturbatory one.

Yeah, but nobody cares honey. I had a system crash and took it over to Best Buy - and told the guy I'd like to save all my porn and advertisments, even though it's mostly backed up.
He was like sure, no problem unless the hard drive was wasted. (He probably copied everything and it will show up on YouTube after I'm elected to Congress...)

You probably use Windows ,IE and Outlook Explorer
like so many others.
Those programs have made Computer Security the Industry that it is.
Google AdAware ,they have a free version, get it and then delve into their documentation.
You will see where files are kept on your computer and what you can do to erase your tracks.
External drive is a good idea for storage but data burnt to media can only be read if it is in the reader.
If you ever think of getting rid of a hard drive
First, run DBAN on it ,freeware utility that is consistently in the top 2 of All utilities designed to wipe a hard drive.
it is very simple to use and free.
Nobody wants to leak personal info ,do they ?
You could use for example

I just got a delightful little external HD by Hitachi from Beast Buy. Many gig, minimal money. Go to the BB website www.bestbuy.com and check them out. I got the 500GB model to offload a lot of porn...er...*Ahem*...'Reasearch material'...that was clogging up the system. I'm very happy with it and expect I'll get a couple more to backup systems that have a tendency to choke on the occasional MS update.
Easy, USB interface, plug-n-play, fast. :D

Keep all your filth on the external hard-drive and download Crap cleaner for flushing your tracks and you wont go far wrong:

ugh, buy the external because at least then you are feeding a small Asian family, I think they get .25 to $1.00 a hard drive, fucking corporate bastards!!!!!!!!!!!!
what this thread needs are suggestions for password locking such drives, or even better pw locking partitions
only thing I know thats somewhat decent is Steganos Safe mode, it seemed to do the job

 B1, I'm impressed...you rattled off terms like USB & plug-n-play like an old hand. Some of the techie is rubbing off on you after all.
jeze9belle, "secure" is a relative term. With the proper equipment, a hard drive on which the data has been overwritten with 1's and 0's a half-dozen times can still be read, but of course that is very small (unless the CIA has you on their watch list). For most PC users, the external HD is a good bet, but you'll want to wipe your Intenet Temporary Files folder after surfing, and don't just right-click on a file in Windows Explorer and hit delete: files stay in the "recycle bin" for a long time. Instead, right-click, hold down the shift key, and hit delete. Instead of sending the file to the recycle bin, this "permanently" deletes the file (not really; it simply changes a bit of data at the beginning of the file so Windows will overwrite the file later). As suggested, there are programs which will "scrub" your HD, at least to the point of relative security.

Don't worry about it...unless you've been living in a glass house all your life. Just do what you feel like doing and deal with it. As I have said in the past, "We're all gonna die anyway and, none of this shit's goin' with us."

Either of these would do:

As a computer store owner I would suggest using an external hard drive for everything you don't want on your computer or laptop. I only use laptops and have an external drive just for that. I also suggest you use AVG antivirus. It is free and it updates itself and all us computers guys use it. I do not suggest Norton, they always clash with Windows. Use adaware and spybot search and destroy weekly. Also d/l some free cleaners to wipe all your tracks easily. Even if the external drive dies your computer is fine....
