Never had a virus. Never had a really bad crash. The insane slow down I've experienced but nothing more serious than that. I only use my windows computer for gaming and work though.

Yeah, my PC (Dell latitude laptop) has been hijacked. In response I switched the little mofo to Ubuntu... No more problems. My main machine is a Mac... no problems also.
The moral is... If you run Windoze, then you get what you deserve.

I use
Free Avg-Anti-Virus
Firefox browser
Ad-aware
Spybot - Search and Destroy
Spyware Blaster
Sygate Firewall
This applys to XP, not sure if its the same on Vista Machine.
16) Disable WebPopUps (Back to Top)
Seems that people are using WebPopUp Messenger to send spam to unsuspecting Windows users. I believe if you disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, this will no longer function. However, here is the way to shut the service off completely.
a. Right click on MY COMPUTER.
b. Select MANAGE.
c. Select SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS
d. Double Click SERVICES.
e. Find MESSENGER service (alphabetical order)
f. Right Click MESSENGER and select PROPERTIES.
g. Hit STOP.
h. Select DISABLED from START TYPE menu.
i. Hit OK.

lol, Microsoft is technically the richest kid on the block. Apple not far behind as of late in homes (keyword..................homes). Linux as powerful and as popular as it is will be a drawoff for about 30 more years with people lazy about learning how to truly operate a personal computer due to the GUI dominating the lazy person's world over the command line...............

Taking a break from the cock pics & drama threads, thought I'd discuss something that concerns us all on here obviously all being computer owners & on the net. Have you ever had a virus? Has your computer ever come under attack? Do you bother with security at all, or just rely on good old windows firewall, and keep clicking shut that annoying baloon that pops up telling you, you have no virus software. What security software would you recommend. I'd just like to say that Norton Internet Security is a pile of crap & slowed my PC down to a crawl, even after updating to an AMD dual core 6000+ & 2 gigs of ddr800 ram. I now use:
Zone Alarm firewall:
http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm-Firewall-Windows-2000-XP-/3000-10435_4-10698360.html?tag=lst-0-1
AVG anti virus
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10726661.html?tag=lst-0-1
Ad-Aware
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/3000-8022_4-10731194.html?tag=lst-0-1
All of the above programs are free.
I've also got that Windows Defender off Microsoft, which is free, if you have a genuine copy of Windows.
I got a virus last week that changed my desktop, my mouse settings, my audio settings, disconnected my Norton and kept sending error messages to download some BS software...It was a bitch of a virus but the "Geek Squad" was worth the $99. They walked me though it and set me up the AVG spyware...Norton is USELESS

Stealth There is NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that a port (or even any computer) exists at this IP address!
Your Internet port xx9 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

you called him a member of a prehistoric race for speaking on Microsoft being the spoiled rich kid yet you call yourself an old boy????
dude wtf is your problem?!?
in this entire thread all you've managed to do is attack anyone speaking on Microsoft, and it's been a weak attack at that. If you have personal issues with big 'M' that's fine, send them a complaint letter and install Ubuntu til your fingers bleed from typing at command line prompts, but it is what it is, Big M is the rich kid and they aren't losing that title anytime soon..................

thing is for private pc useage the question of security is WAY overplayed. If you follow a few simple rules chances are high you will very rarely be in contact with malicious programmes.

I'm saying i'm sick to the bleedin' back teeth of shitwits, the neuvo-geeks, coming out with sanctimonious crap like "If you use Windows you get what you deserve".
What is that exactly? An operating system the entire planet can use.
Before Win95, who had a computer [apart from geekskweekers]?
Now they're a world-wide phenomenon, every home has one [near enough].
Love him or hate him, give Gates his due.
I almost agree with you [i'm not agreeing, on principle].
Straight out of the box, Windows is insecure, you need to nail it down.
Fortunately, 99.9% of people have little worth protecting [apart from their primo porn collection]. For that 0.1%, by all means, change Opererating Systems. Move over to the the new wunderkind, Ubuntu [personally, i prefer Suse].
BUT, if you believe that you're 100% secure, you're going to get caught with your panties down AGAIN, and have no right talking about IT security.
The best you can say is you're secure...today.
Now i have to go to work.

My computer runs Windows XP and IE7 with Symantec Antivirus Cororate Edition Version 10, I also use Counterspy to protect from adware and spyware, and I have a hardware firewall with NAT out at the gateway of my network. I have never been hit with a virus or had any adware or spyware. As long as you have good prtection in place you don't have to worry about catching anything.
Just to let you know, all operating systems are not 100% safe and all operating systems can be made reasonably safe.
Kinda like a good condom.

I use Norton Internet Security 2007, its ok and protects me but yeh it does slow down the computer quite a bit. If you use zonealarm then you are stupid, its the most annoying, stupid and downright shitty program ever made.
It pops up telling you that Steam wants to access the internet and you click yes to accept, you have to do that everytime even if you click the box sayinng "don't remind me again." God I hate that program. D:

Antivirus software and software firewalls are really for the birds. It's a case of the cure being worse than the disease.
First thing I do when I get on a computer is to disable the windows firewall, get rid of any realtime virus scanning and any other mickey mouse bullshit that might be on there.
Just back your stuff up routinely and surf intelligently.

Straight out of the box, Windows is insecure, you need to nail it down.
Even nailed down, it is still insecure. M$ only alerts users of security breaches well after they've worked out a patch to fix the OS. 95% of market share logically translates to 95% of viruses designed for that OS.
... if you believe that you're 100% secure, you're going to get caught with your panties down AGAIN, and have no right talking about IT security.
In my years in IT, Jericho, I have run windoze (3.1 to XP), Mac OS (7.6 to and 10.4) and Linux (Redhat, Mandrake, Debian and Ubuntu). The only machines to be infected by viruses, have been windoze boxes. Of course this doesn't mean I'm 100% secure, but I'm a hell of a lot closer to 100% than any windoze user.
I'm also not familiar with any virus that would install panties on me, then remove them...

Holy shit, just install this app, and browse the web as you normally do, and see how many people are spying on you
http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/
The thought police are closing in
LOL, these are not people that are spying on you. It is just normal activity that happens when you cruise the web. As long as you have a good firewall, antispyware and antivirus, you will be pretty safe. The thing that you really need to look out for is applications that try to install without your permission. That is when you can be watched by other people.
Looking at an application like PeerGaurdian and thinking that you are being watched is like walking down the street and thinking everyone that looks at you is spying on you.
