That is, "fear of the number six-hundred and sixty-six." Many people do; when the Reagans moved to 666 St. Cloud Road, they had the address changed to 668 St. Cloud Road. The Book of Revelation (13:17-18) presents 666 as "the number of a man", associated with "the beast," an apocalyptic creature. However, the author of Revelation leaves it to the reader to figure out the symbolism of this number, thus inspiring mystics for 2000 years.

In mathematics:

666 is an abundant number. It is the sum of the first 36 natural numbers (i.e. 1 + 2 + 3... + 34 + 35 + 36 = 666), and thus a triangular number. Since 36 is both square and triangular, 666 is the sixth number of the form n2(n2 + 1) / 2 (triangular squares) and the eighth number of the form n(n + 1)(n2 + n + 2) / 8 (doubly triangular numbers.)

666 is the sum of the squares of the first seven prime numbers (i.e. 22 + 32 + 52 + 72 + 112 + 132 + 172 = 666).

The harmonic mean of the decimal digits of 666 is an integer: 3/(1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6) = 6, making 666 the 54th number with this property.

In base 10, 666 is a palindromic number, a repdigit and a Smith number. A prime reciprocal magic square based on 1/149 in base 10 has a magic total of 666.

The Roman numeral representation of the number 666 (DCLXVI) uses once each the Roman numeral symbols with values under 1,000, occurring in descending order of their respective values (D = 500, C = 100, L = 50, X = 10, V = 5, I = 1).

The biggie: Is the World Wide Web (www) the mark of the beast? And more important: how do you "count the number of the beast"?

In Gematria (the use of using Hebrew or Greek letters as numbers, since the Hebrews and Greeks did not have separate symbols for numbers), the letter Vav (our v or w) is also the number 6; thus, simply expressed, www = 666. However, note what is often overlooked: it is not simply the repetition of three 6's which yields the mark of the beast, but the count. Rev. 3:18 states: "Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six."

How do we "count the number of the beast"? In Revelation 14:11 the mark is referred to "the mark of his NAME". In Revelation 13:17, 15:2 it's called "the number of his NAME". So the "mark" and "number" refer to his "name". We count the number of his name. Gematria is the adding up or "counting" the numerical equivalent of each letter in a word or name. This was fairly common in the days before alphabetic numbers. For instance, on the walls of ancient Pompeii, someone wrote, "I love her whose number is 545".

The "count the number of the beast" is the total of adding the letter/numerical value of his name. This "count" equals "Six hundred sixty and six', not simply three 6's or 666.

So by applying Gematria to Revelation 13:18 related to the Hebrew "www", we actually have 6+6+6 or 18 — not 666. That is, the "count" of "www" is 18, not 666, so the web is not the beast.
