Polls: Sarkozy Elected French President

May 6 02:08 PM US/Eastern

PARIS (AP) - French voters chose Nicolas Sarkozy as their new president on Sunday, giving the conservative a comfortable margin for victory and a mandate for change, result projections from four polling agencies showed. His Socialist opponent conceded minutes after polls closed.

The agencies said the conservative won 53 percent of the vote amid massive turnout, dashing Socialist Segolene Royal's hopes of being elected France's first woman president. The projections were based on vote counts from representative samples of hundreds of polling stations across the country.

Socialist opponent Segolene Royal threatens violence?

PARIS (Reuters) - France risks violence and brutality if right-winger Nicolas Sarkozy wins Sunday's presidential election, his Socialist opponent Segolene Royal said on Friday.

On the last day of official campaigning, opinion polls showed Sarkozy enjoyed a commanding lead over Royal, who accused the former interior minister of lying and polarizing France.

"Choosing Nicolas Sarkozy would be a dangerous choice," Royal told RTL radio.

"It is my responsibility today to alert people to the risk of (his) candidature with regards to the violence and brutality that would be unleashed in the country (if he won)," she said...

"She's finishing in violence, in a certain state of feverishness," Sarkozy told reporters during a trip to the Alps. "When I hear her remarks, I wonder why a woman of her qualities carries such violent feelings. It adds nothing to the debate."

Nice rhetoric coming from the left.

"if you don't elect us we'll unleash hell upon the Earth"

I can see in France's case it's working well...

He's a hell of a lot friendlier to US interests than Royale – which usually isn't saying much where Guallists are concerned. Still, his rhetoric has been more positive than one might expect, so I'll be interested to see which policies he actually implements. It would be nice to see a France whose foreign policy is not quite so stridently anti-American (yes, I know it's a two-way street).

Riots in central Paris after election results

May 07, 2007 08:30am

CLASHES between police and protestors have been reported in central Paris and the southeastern city of Lyon after conservative leader Nicolas Sarkozy was elected French President overnight.

In the Place de la Bastille in Paris riot police fired tear gas and at least one burst of water cannon after hundreds of rioters – some wearing masks – began throwing bottles, stones and other missiles.

Earlier, a small crowd brandishing black and red anarchist flags set fire to an effigy of Mr Sarkozy before tearing it limb from limb and then stamping on it. Demonstrators changed "police everywhere, justice nowhere".

About 5000 supporters of defeated Socialist party candidate Segolene Royal had gathered in the square to await the election results. Mr Sarkozy beat Ms Royal by 53 per cent of the vote to 47 per cent, according to projections.

What's the point of all the violence? The poor guy's not even in office yet.

These rioters are playing right into his hands. With
this youth street violence going on the first thing he
is going to do is put in place some draconian curfew
and/or other police-state legislature. Which of course
will only further polarize the situation.

hey, just a guess. I will be in Paris in a few days so
I will give a report. I would be very curious to see
what parts of the country voted which way in the
election. A general rule of thumb is that the people
in the countryside always think that the cities are pits
of evil and need a strong police hand to keep them
from turning into Sodom/Gomorrah. Just look at
the coastal bifurcation here in the USA.

Judging from recent events they may have a point.

LOL... So true. Then again, for some, it's the whole Sodom/Gomorrah, hedonistic aspect of city life that attracts them to a places like NYC to begin with.
