I had to ask- Why do you all feel that are there so few black transwomen on this site? Do some of you think it is the result of a lack of efficient outreaching/marketing to black transwomen communities, or (though I try to assume best intentions) Do some of you feel that black transwomen are purposefully not informed about the existence of this website? Do some of you feel that there are in fact a plethora of black transwomen on this site, and we may just not be posting any topics?
I would kind of be interested in what your responses to these questions I have asked will be...

Do some of you feel that there are in fact a plethora of black transwomen on this site, and we may just not be posting any topics?

That one. I seen maybe 10 black girls with avatars here, maybe 20 white girls with avatars, 10 latina girls , 30 'mixed-race' ladies, You could always do a poll. Girls(and guys) without avatars, well they could be just about anybody. maybe there are many girls lurking, without profiles??? I seem to remember a "post your ethnicity " thread, you may want to find that and trwal through the pages collating the info. Thankfully Peggygee posts regularly , I guess the other black girls are just under-represented. Some girls also are absent from the board for many weeks , then return.
More girls of all kinds please..........

Maybe because a number of the black sisters are too hardcore for this dainty forum. I've noticed that this forum has a propensity for censorship, hence it wouldn't be able to handle a black sister telling it like it is. Black people are probably more likely to tell it like it is, because their ancestors were slaves in this country, thus they are more liable to know that the claim that "It can't happen here" (referring to brutal government tyranny in the U.S.) is demonstrably false.

Even in the avatar selections click asian and you only see Yasmin Lee on it (no other asian girls on there as well).

Must admit, I noticed this too, Personally I think that all the girls should post thier own pic as thier avatar as most do OR go without a pic IF they want to remain anonymous. I think Guys should be discouraged from using a girl's pic as an avatar? I'm not saying it should be all passport photos but i just can't see why a 'guy' poster should have a PORTRAIT style pic of a TS that is a member of the board and has her own profile. I thought the avatar pic of 'crayons' was the dude's girlfriend when after months i realise crayons IS THE GIRL. TO GUYS:it doesn't have to ACTUALLY BE you in the pic but at least don't use "missX" as people will assume that you ARE "missX" or that you want to be "missX". We all skim through at times, no?

Yes back to the original topic, I think any diversity that offers a better understanding is helpful. I personally hadn't noticed that black women are under-represented here. It might be just an overall demographic thing, meaning proportionate to the statistics in American society. Also there are alot of European women that post here as well, so that further lowers their percentile of the whole. Fist of all it looks like you are new here, so a very warm welcome to you. Although I do not login here all that much, I do find that there is a shortage of women here... peroiod. It would be nice if there were a lot more girls posting here. The majority here are guys.

I am INDEED new on here...and because of what I had been told, I became curious and had to ask those specific questions in order to "quench my curiosity" if you will. I don't really feel qualified to answer this question (A. I'm new here. B. I don't understand why people choose to join these cyber communities and C. Most importantly, I'm a white girl, living in the "Whitest City" in America [Portland, wow, talk about a fucked up history]).

I do however have a lengthy experience with internet message boards (specifically ones predominantly occupied by liberalish white folk) Regardless of the focal point, be it trans issues, politics, art, the escorting industry, you name it; at some point a discussion inevitably happens about race. Specifically a discussion inevitably happens about racism, and people always go batshit.

Some white people deny having any part in racial oppression, some denounce it loudly in an effort to assuage their guilt, and many blunder along trying to have a nice and tidy discussion. From my point of view the problem is that racist oppression still exists, white people still benefit overwhelmingly from it. Denying a part is sort of irrelevant and ultimately perpetuates injustice. Loudly complaining is easy when no work is required, thus liberal white folks make hollow gestures and continue to benefit from white supremacy. And for well meaning white people who aim to have a nice and tidy discussion about race; you can't, because racism is not nice and tidy. There's massive changes that need to take place, (hmm... maybe reperations for a start) politcally, economically, culturally and environmentally, before talking about race will really be just another friendly discussion.

Of course, talking about race will often make people feel uncomfortable.
When engaged in these type of discussions, I have found that people
are either on the offensive or under attack, as race inspires a myriad of
heated emotions. Accusations fly. People get hurt. Others feel guilty or
angry. No progress is made.

Discussion, discourse, disagreeing can be healthy, it allows us to examine

Maybe because a number of the black sisters are too hardcore for this dainty forum. I've noticed that this forum has a propensity for censorship, hence it wouldn't be able to handle a black sister telling it like it is. Black people are probably more likely to tell it like it is, because their ancestors were slaves in this country, thus they are more liable to know that the claim that "It can't happen here" (referring to brutal government tyranny in the U.S.) is demonstrably false.

I think there are several different causal factors, which correspond to different segments of the transcommunity. You and Miss June and several others certainly are more cognizant of the situation as regards "transwomen of color" than I am, but I think there are several different elements at play, and several assumptions underlying this discussion.

To take the last point first, HA is a global community. Historically, it has been very closely tied to the NYC transcommunity, which is its own fabric, but my perception is that the NYC-centric aspect of HA has fallen off over the years. I think there's still a strong NYC presence on HA, but hardly a bias any longer and not for sometime. HA is also primarily an American community: but this too is true only to a point, and I think we've seen a steady influx of members from other regions, particularly Europe, so while there may be an American bias, it's not by any means exclusive. And both of these are for the better: the more global we are as a community, the better, the stronger, the more potential for growth and change.

Now we come to various elements at play, and in this specific discussion, that of transwomen of color posting on HA. The focus here seems to definitely be American, as far as I can tell. There are (apparently) few black women who post here, but most of them appear to be American. We have several very active transwomen from the UK posting: Jennifer, Alison, Chica, and more. But women of color? Hmmm. Not sure what to make of that, vis-a-vis either the forum or the ethnic demographics in other countries, but it seems to me that we're really talking about American transwomen of color: or am I way off? (Could be, if so, give me a shake and let me know what I missed.)

OK, focusing on American TWC (TransWomen of Color--don't we all love acronyms?): Internet access does seem to be a factor, insofar as demographically all people of color, as Mandy indicated, appear to have significantly less Internet access than those of European background, or even Asian and Latin (if by "of color" we really mean African-American and not Asian-American, Hispanic, or any other non-white minority). I also think that (despite their rather intense rhetoric) both Jamie and Badazzbody have raised valid points regarding the motivation of TWC participating in HA or other online forums. Perhaps in relation to that or perhaps coincidentally, I suspect that many TWC simply are not interested in participating in an online forum, that their interests lie elsewhere. Perhaps to some degree it's a matter of communication, of language, of comfort/discomfort in engaging in dialogue online.
