I still haven't seen the first Hostel. I can deal with blood and gore, but I can't deal with torture too much. I came close to seeing it though.

How does "Hostel" compare to "Saw"? Am I correct in thinking that "Saw" is like a bedtime story compared to "Hostel"?

Saw is more cerebral, lol, Hostel is just gore and ridiculous killings done in Quentin's over the top style. I must admit I was expecting more blood shooting in the air.

I thought it was bogus too. A very bad attempt at asian cinema if you ask me. I like how they're trying to sell this off as a Tarantino Presents film, because they know the first one didn't do as well as they hoped. Pathetic.

I still haven't gotten around to watching 'Hostel'...

I like the 'Saw' flicks, but Wolf Creek is the most disturbing and just plain creepy suspense film that I have seen in a long time.

And I can't wait to see the new suspense flick with Samuel Jackson and Christina Ricci, it looks pretty intense.

Did I just say intense?

I'm beginning to think that I've been hanging out with the line cooks too much lately...

But they do keep some fine chiba... 8)

yeh, that sums it up well. Hostel is really just about gore, torture
for shock value. Saw has some mystery element to it ( though it
maybe getting kind of watered down after 3 films)

Because Hostel is associated with the name of Quentin Tarantino
and there's some obvious talk-hype from the first one, i think
it's very likely the 2nd one gets a lot of audience sales as well.

I'm with you. Blood and gore ain't too much of shit. But seeing all this torture shit is just not cool for me to watch. Its too twisted. Imagine the real killers that actually do that shit that's in those movies.

I watched this movie last night!

It was awful!

Not as in "bad movie" awful, but awful as in it was horrifically shocking!

OMG could you imagine?... what if you got into a situation like that?

...i would die!

out of all the possible movie choices that exist people decide to watch torture porn. it would almost be justifiable if the movies had interesting plots and good acting or some kind of political message. but these movies are bad, they don't show the realistic consequences of violence and beyond that they diminish the serious issue of the use of torture by governments which is real.

Theres a lot of debate about Hostel, Saw, Wolf Creek etc but the truth is that horror has been about shocking people for as long as it existed and in a world where you can turn on CNN and see bombs blowing the shit outta people we are a lot harder to shock.

Eli Roth is just doing old school 70's/80's style slasheresqe stuff with t&a and a ton of gore.

Gre Maclean who made Wolf Creek - just took a real story and tweaked it ala Texas Chainsaw Massacre (it's a good film though).

The two guys who made Saw just wanted to make a interesting scary film on a small budget and somehow managed to make a big hit.

If you want to see a really shocking Horror film take a look at Tod Browning's Freaks from the early 30's.

Hostel was pretty crap if you ask me.

Saw I and II were good movies. Saw III, eh, not so much. I have not seen IV.

Audition was much more disturbing. If you hate needles, don't watch Audition. Its the most disturbing movie I have ever seen.

I hear that Ichi the Killer and Cannibal Holocaust are the worst, with Cannibal being the most disturbing movie ever made. I have never seen either of these. The makers of Cannibal were actually questioned by the law to make sure that nobody actually dies in the making. I have read many reviews of people saying that they wished they had never watched Cannibal.

Audition was honestly one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Pace? There was no pace. Payoff? There was no payoff. The only redeeming factor I can possibly see about it was it had a cute girl in it, and that's not reason enough to watch it.

Ichi The Killer was directed by the same guy, and it was slightly better, but didn't deserve an ounce of the hype that surrounds it. Truly two of Miike's most overrated and dull films.
Visitor Q, now there is a Miike film that was great.

Cannibal Holocaust, a true legend. What other film made on $200,000, included numerous live animal killings, went on to gross an estimated $200,000,000 worldwide?
Fuckin' 80's Italian cinema.

I don't like movies like this. I can't eat without thinking about it. Most people get squeamish when you mention maggots while eating chicken noodle soup but I can watch Fear Factor while eating any meal. But stuff like this does it for me. I couldn't eat in peace for 2 days after watching part of Hostel where half the girl's face was cut off.

HMMM I'm not the preserve the universe type of guy but killing animals just for a movie is not cool. Though I'm not sure how they died I surely hope that they didn't get tortured alive or something, or the directors are going to hell. lol

i could see snuggling up under a blanket with your bf or gf watching a creepy dvd. but hostel2 just doesn't seem like a very good date movie. what do you say while you're walking out of the theater? "the symbolism was quite powerful and the director's heart was in the right place but he just kind of lost me during that genital mutilation scene"

The Vomiting is only part of it, This movie is fucking brutal and twisted (which is a great thing) just dl it or buy whatever if you want a Good and actually disturbing Horror Movie.

lol at Modern Horror Movies, nothing but half assed shock value and Horrid remakes.

I think maybe in the future, these really terrifying horror flicks mentioned in these threads will be remade sometime in the future just like every other movie. Like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and others came from the old versions but made better. Imagine if they remade these movie now, They'd be 10 times better than what they were in their time.

Remakes are rarely ever even in the same league as the originals.
So, quite simply, no.
Taste is subjective though, feel free to enjoy a modern/bastardized version of a classic if you wish, but the originals generally stand on their own.

(sadly, Cannibal Holocaust is being remade, and it's going to suck, without a doubt)

The funny thing is, with whiskey (which is really the only alcohol I enjoy) I never get a hangover.
So I'm actually feeling pretty good, aside from stepping on a bottle I managed to break, and some minor scratches on my arm because my blade is dull. Tenuous injuries at best. In retrospect, it wasn't a bad night, but if I'm in the right mood then alcohol strikes my nerve of self-loathing.
Thanks for asking anyway, I'm good. I've got tonight off work, so even better.

glad to hear it. remember, if things evr get that bad, you could always say fuck it and make your way to an island somewhere. I'm convinced modern humans' angst is just a result of how complicated life has become. if I ever get really fed up i'm going to Tahiti. no lie.
