I might be alone in my opinion, but in my opinion (and I know you're all just DYING to get Pumpdaddy's input on this subject) fur looks better on the animals it was stolen from than on the people who callously choose to wear it.

Just finding the pics for the last few posts brought back memories of my animal rights days. I had to stop after many years - it was exhausting and discouraging. Considering a million animals a day are killed for food in the US alone, I felt like I was holding up a sign saying slavery is wrong at an African port in 1700. People are capable of the highest and lowest things. I'll always be a voice of dissent, but there's only so much a person can take.
I remember being interviewed once. The guy had been pretty dismissive over my group's intentions - finally, he asks me," What do you people see as your final goal? Where does this end?" I said, "That's exactly what we're trying to ask all of you."

So suckseed, if an animal kills another animal for food, isn't that cruel as well?

You know, some humans eat other animals because that's all they can get their hands on.

What're you going to say next, that eating a plant, which is a living thing, is also cruel?

You know how much of the rain forest is taken up by your stupid soy beans?

You know how many underpaid citizens exist who work for "vegetarian" companies?

Goddamn, stop being such a whiner.

The fur debate is unique because, although people still need to eat, very few people do not have access to other, better ways to stay warm. It's cruelty for vanity. Faux fur looks just as nice, and says something about the wearer - that they possess compassion as well as style/money/beauty. All your other arguments are old hat to anyone who's taken the time to investigate. Soybean crops are destroying the rainforest, eh? Good one.
I see you're from the South. I'm always amazed whenever I go there to visit my parents that recycling isn't the norm - like it seems to be everywhere in the West. Bottom line: life isn't an either/or situation. it's where you choose to draw the line. For me, it's minimizing my driving, eating organic whenever possible, making healthy choices, and choosing not to participate in unnecessary wastefulness. You're free to do as you like.

I don't wear leather actually, but whereas leather is a huge byproduct of an industry that uses virtually every part of a cow, animals raised for fur lead hellish lives ended by hellish deaths, and the rest of the bodies are discarded. This is an imperfect world. It's not an all or nothing proposition...merely a compassionate choice. If you care to debate me further, bring along a better argument. Saying leather = fur is just lazy thinking.

I don't really wish to start a debate over it. But you can't post a vid from PeTA (extremists much?) showing conditions in fucking China of all places, and expect no rebuttal.

You know what? I'm not surprised at all that the conditions of a fur farm in China could be truly deplorable. I mean with all their stellar quality control concerning lead paint on toys, toxins in pet foods, or fucking roofies on Aqua Dots.

Since you've decided to use a link to PeTA, I'll rebut with a link to the Montana Trappers Organization. Now maybe I'm a bit biased (although no more biased than someone who gets their info from a PeTA page, but let's not split hairs), but I've always found most hunters, trappers, and farmers are a LOT more familiar with animals than most animal rights activists. Familiarity and all.

Here's the link (http://www.montanatrappers.org/management/fur-farming.htm)

Some highlights....

1) As any pet owner knows, the condition of the fur is one of the clearest indications of whether an animal is healthy and well cared-for. Since the livelihood of the professional fur farmer depends upon producing top-quality fur, if for no other reason, the welfare of his animals is of prime importance.

2) Gunnar Krantz, Chairman of the Swedish Federation of Animal Protection Societies, has written: Only a person who is interested in animals and who likes them becomes a fur farmer. Working with furbearing animals is no easy job; they are live animals and must be cared for and fed every day - weekday, weekend or public holiday. The farmer who has no real interest in his animals or feeling for their welfare soon suffers himself, in the form of poor financial return

3) Straw is used for bedding and to insulate cages, while the manure from ranched animals returns to the soil as fertilizer. Finally, the meat by-product of fur farming provides animal feeds, bonemeal and other products. Mink oil is used to produce hypo-allergic soaps, cosmetics and fine leather preservatives.

4) Here is what veterinarian and animal-welfare authority Erhardt Fredericksen had to say about anti-fur films which have been shown on European television: I most definitely reject the monstrous assertions concerning fur breeding in Scandinavia expressed from time to time by some extremist organizations. The assertions and pictures which this writer has had the opportunity of seeing, and which purport to describe actual conditions, must arouse the deepest indignation and have no place in reality. Those responsible for this misleading 'information' do themselves little credit, and it seems perverse to assert that this is being disseminated from a wish to protect animals.

5)The choice of synthetics can NEVER be for the sake of animals. Synthetics are chemical products, the manufacture and disposal of which causes pollution, depletes non-renewable (usually petroleum) resources and disrupts natural life-supporting ecosystems. Pollution and the destruction of habitat today pose the gravest threats to the survival of thousands of plant and animal species around the world.

Fur, by contrast, is a natural product, a fully renewable resource. Trapping and fur farming are controlled, to ensure that furs can be taken year after year - long after the richest oil well has been depleted.

NOTE: number 1-4 found at the link provided above.
number 5 came for the "facts about fur" page, whose link can be found on the left side of the "fur farming" page.

I could go on, but all I'm really doing is copying and pasting from the link.

As for my own personal thoughts...humans have been wearing animal pelts since humans first evolved. It's as natural as you can get. Technically, yes, wearing fur, or eating meat, or wearing leather requires an animal to die. So be it. It's the natural order of things.

I don't really wish to start a debate over it.... It's the natural order of things.

Well, a tip of the hat to you for that. You brought up some valid points. For me, it really boils down to an emotional response. I like animals and feel sorry for the ones that die for fur. After that, I've looked for arguments to support my response. I suppose if I looked I could find a rebuttal to your points, but....yeah. :) Let's agree to disagree. Peace.

One more thing - I am an ex animal rights activist...got burned out, and don't really like communicating with a megaphone...some but not all of my fellow activists were pretty dogmatic, like abortion fanatics. I saw a lot of pretty heinous stuff. In Colorado I protested Prairie dog shoots...the ranchers wouldn't even finish off the ones they shot, because wounding counted as a kill...basically they seemed to be pretty heartless. Regarding antifur films...i saw a lot of stuff that came from the U.S. Like puppy mills, for every responsible farmer there are just as many seat-of-the-pants operations run by idiots. And fur is much more about vanity than keeping warm.

Let's agree to disagree. Peace.

Works for me.

FWIW, while I accept it I certainly don't revel in the death of anything (except maybe bad ideas).

ETA: I agree whole heartedly that plenty of people are royal ass hats when it comes to treatment of animals. As a former hunter, I abhor some of the methods used by so called "hunters" (radio transmitters on dogs, exotic animal ranches where animals are shot in the freakin cage, etc...)

What I don't like seeing, is the denouncement of all forms of an activity, simply because some jamokes do it incredibly wrong.

.

I wish there was a way that they could shear off the (relatively long) fur from animals without killing or hurting them, then somehow attach that fur seamlessly to a backing (like leather or something similar), giving a fur product that does not kill the animal, looks and feels as good as an animal hide/fur and is really renewable.

Ive seen rabbit fur stuff where the cut bits of fur (hairs?) are sewed into fabric, but the effect isn't quite the same. Maybe technology will come up with some way of using static electricity to stand 2 inch fur on end and glue the hairs to something. Because while there is decent quality short fake fur out there, there's virtually nothing for high quality long faux furs.

-Tara

Tara Emory

I'm talking about shearing- like they do with wool and sheep.. it doesn't kill the sheep- in fact, the sheep might not want all that fur on them in the summer time.

Of course, maybe in the future with stem cells they'll be able to just grow animal fur skin in a labratory without the animal..

well, the leather its attached to doesn't have to be real leather. It just needs to be something that seems like leather

It never ceases to amaze me that people who are often the victims of intolerance, ignorance and hate can then be so intolerant themselves.

This thread is one of the best here and it has been ruined by intolerance of some.
Simply...if thine eyes offend thee pluck them out. Fine if you do not approve of fur....don't wear it. Why preach at others? I don't want to get catty so I will try to give some reasons why fur is not cruel.

Furs are always going to be part of female glamour and that will make it iconic for the t-girl. In addition it is not just glamorous and beautiful to look at but sensual to the touch. That is important to many who are more sensual than normal men and indeed many women. Nothing beats what nature creates and it is beautful, infinitely renewable and does not damage the environment. Far more damage has been done to animals carelessly through the huge exapansion of mass produced synthetics which is exploitable of human labour in the third world, is made from petro chemicals which damage the environment and animals by destroying habitat to extract it, transporting it (exon valdez), and because is cheap and disposable we are not paying the true environmental cost of buying or disposing of it. It fills landfills and again hurts animals causing far more irresponsible long term damage.

People have worn fox and mink for thousands and thosuands of years and yet they are the most common mammal predator on the planet...that is because they are looked after because they are..or were..valued. Rabbit was introduced to many countries including the uk precisely for hunting so it wouldn't even exist otherwise. Of course it was used for meat aswell as fur but it still is today. As are nutria (coypu) beaver and of course sheep (which many of the pics are here anyway). Native people, whose only incme comes from furs, also eat the animals including reindeer seal fox mink and sable. Those people haven't damaged the environment like we have with our "alernative" resources. On western farms it usually ends up in pet food but on chuckotchkan farms they are eaten too. So ethically it is incorrect to say that leather is different to fur.
Add to that the glaringly obvious fact that he animal doesn't disinguish between killing it for fur or meat, and indeed is life as a furbearer is likely to be far nicer than a factory farmed chicken, and any objection evaporates. You do know that mink have to be kept solitary and in a large split level breeding box the size of a stable don't you rather than keep in cramped conditions like chicken ? I mean it seems some of you antis are suggesing that meat and leather is okay...as though the animal approves of it. Meat is NO more necessary than fur to us in the west. I'd like to see where the cow gave you permission to wear its hide and eat it!

Humans are predators and like all predators will compete with other predaors. So they all kill not necessarily for sustainance. A lion will always try to kill a cheetah cub and doesn't eat it. The fact that we make use of fur from controlling a rival predator in a battle for resources is therefore irrelevant. Indeed, all of us are here today simply because our ancestors wore furs to survive.
You will probably now say that we have become more "enlightened" over the last few years...but forgive me for not swallowing that because what I read in this thread is not love for animals but contempt and hate for those that wear them. Then you may say also that while animals kill for rivalry not food, and they kill for sport too (yes...watch a cat play with a mouse or a dolphin torment its prey) that we know better than animals. Well that brings us neatly round...then it is you who are saying we are above animals..and that is the ultimate speciesism. It is nature get over it. As long as we are careful and use fur sustainably there should not be a problem.

To me furs are fabulous and last many many years sustaining energy and being beautiful. Saves on fuel and global warming too. Meat? I can take it or leave it...gives energy for 24 hours then its excreted. Somehow; I think fur is more worth the sacrifice of the animal.

And these perverse ideas about animal rights...where did they originate? Nazi Germany. Don't believe me? Check:
www.kaltio.fi/index.php?494

After that, urban man , alienated from the ways of rearing animals, became suckers for animal rights propaganda. As early as the sixties snuff videos were being made allegedly showing cruelty. They are still up to it today. Look at this;
www.furcommission.com/news/newsC7.htm

I was lucky to have spent a short time in Finland so I have been to fur farms. The animals are extremely well cared for; how do you think beautiful fur can be manintained ? Stress leads to fur loss. I am most angry about it because this propaganda hurts those who love animals and are good at caring for them. Furbearers are played with, groomed etc. One flea and the fur is ruined. And yet the lie persists that these people...mostly young girls who love their charges...its no different to rearing lambs...somehow are "torturing" them!

So. All these PETA vids and spiels. Give it a rest. They are finished. Because THIS is what they have been secretly doing while telling us fur is cruel:
http://www.petakillsanimals.com/petaTrial2.cfm

That is dogs and cats given to them for rehoming and they have been killing them rather than caring for them. The ultimate hypocrisy.

Meanwhile, most sensible conservationists have now aligned themsleves with supportng the sustainable fur trade because as a human resource it is far less environmentally and habitat damaging than the alternatives. The famous Canadian Conservationist William Lishman for example , husband of designer Paul Lishman, has backed the canadian fur council "Fur is Green" campaign and no doubt had a big input into it. As other than t-girls these days the kind of women who now wear fur are Big Cat Diary's conservationist Saba Douglas Hamilton be prepared for a big turnaround in political correctness. Read Paula Lishman's campaign here and you will see why things are changing quickly

In the meantime, please even if you are unconvinced be a little more tolerant of other peoples choices. Otherwise where does it end? Anti smokers being allowed to hassle smokers in that thread? And pretty soon you get to the stage were religious bigots are hassling t-girls and gays and then we are back to racism.

I am a t-girl and I wear furs. So does my girlfriend. We never get any hassle and most peoples views and reaction is now very positive. We both smoke too...I wish I could say the same there; because the agression of non smokers is bordering on fanaticism. No surprise to find that smoking bans were dreamt up in Nazi germany too. Its changing a little though.... its like prohibtion the more you surpress something the more people will want it. Smoking and furs are undergoing something of a renaissance and t -girls are getting immense popularity with straight men because we have the courage to do what they would really want girls to do. Both my girl and I get hit on and complimented on our furs and cigarettes lit for us. I am not a camp t girl I pass for a girl easily. Not that I go out as a girl wih my girlfriend...it happens seperately. Men like fur and smoking. At last real men do....its hollywood glamour and its coming back. Live with it and let us get on with it or maybe it will be you next who feel the wrath of intolerance about some pleasure you love. Quoting peta is like a bible basher quoting the bible about our other "abhorrent in the face of God" leanings. I doesn't belong here; and I'd like to think we'll eventually live in a more tolerant society where criticism of others don't belong at all.

And thanks to those who posted the pics of Zoe f***puppet and the other beautiful girls...to me they are the ultimate t girl glamour. More please and do not be intimidated by the intolerant among us!

phew...sorry for the heavy introductory post but I feel some of the nasty and outdated comments in the thread need addressing.

Goddamn, stop being such a whiner.oh please fuck off name one animal that kills for fur except for humans
