The 'take' is that the identity itself is not the relevant issue, but choosing to make it is.

There was a time when Conservatives in the US defined themselves in terms of small Government, low taxation, and individual liberty.

The most famous exponent of this was William F Buckley who did a lot to revive Conservative ideas that he thought had been made 'unfashionable' by FDR's New Deal Administration -after all, Republican President Eisenhower presided over rates of taxation that Democrats today would never consider normal, that would probably lose them elections.

One of the key statements by Ronald Reagan that helped define the new 'Conservatism' was this from 1986-

"“The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”".

What you have now, and not just in the US, has emerged since the crash of 2008 when the other aspect of Reagan, Thatcher and Rupert Murdoch's vision - Free Markets are superior to all forms of Government- was revealed as a sham, but to save their political careers, Conservatives have transformed their vision, so that now you have

'We are from the Government, and we will tell you who you are',

meaning that Dave might transition to Davina, but 'she' is and will always be a biological male and thus have her identity established by the Govt in law, and a law that by discriminating against Davina's rights as a citizen, means that equality before the law is no longer the right of every citizen. It means that Transgendered Americans have no right to use Female designated rest rooms, seek employment with the military or children, or participate as women in sports. Davina might strip off and prove she does not have a penis, but some wise guy somewhere, probably in either Texas or Florida, will argue that women do not have prostate glands or an Adam's Apple, but do have ovaries and a womb, and so on.

A citizen's freedom to choose their identity has been replaced by the Government choosing it instead. From the concept of individual liberty to State Control has not taken long, and the key is to accept that the faith in Free Markets has been replaced by Faith in Government.

Underlying this move is the use of 'culture wars' to replace the individual with the State because these so-called Conservatives now realize that Identity is not a matter of individual liberty but the identity of what they call 'The Nation'.

That the US is a Nation of immigrants is so obvious it ought not to be contentious, when it is, because Conservatives are now claiming that immigrants don't speak English and crucially, do not 'share our values'. So immigrants are a curse, not a blessing.

So this Identity politics is now at the front and centre of who you are as Americans, or 'the British' for those of us in the UK.

You can identify yourself as a Dragon if you want to, or a Jedi, but legally, the State will decide, and you must bow down to the State.

Realize that who you are will be decided by Donald J Trump, Ron DeSantis, or Greg Abbott, and you might find your definition of Freedom makes you a Marxist, Communist or any epithet to satisfy the hysterical fears of so-called Conservatives, them guys imposing on the people the policies they don't want.
