Phil Donahue, who has died at the age of 88, was better known in the US than here. His later shows were shown, usually around 11pm but only for about a year or so I think, in the mid-1990s.
He featured trans people in his shows -he may have been the first to do so- and always did it with the empathy and interest that he showed to all his guests, though some of his studio audience were free to say negative things, as can be found in link.
One wonders how he would have handled Trump, and it is a pity we never got to see that, and there are shows on YouTube that show him probing Ayn Rand and at one point gently pointing out to her that Palestinians are people too. He was that kind of a man. This is the show he did with Caroline Cossey, aka Tula.
