The more pertinent question might be to ask, why do people define themselves in terms of their gender, sexuality, sexual preference? There are so many more ways of defining who one is. For some, being their national identity may be the most important, as in 'I am British'. Or it might be 'I am an artist'. Bob Dylan asked if he was a poet or some such thing demurred, 'I am just a song and dance man'.

And maybe if people did not insist that these categories of being are existential, we might not be involved in such bad tempered exchanges, and the political uses of gender would not be so toxic, whether it is in Texas, Florida or Iran.

The world, or civilization is not going to collapse because there are lesbians, transgenders, or Texans.

Simply put, a label is "required" for everything - otherwise, society has no one to point to for blame.
