The politicians I've heard trying to pretend that mask mandates and employer mandated vaccination are unconstitutional (they're not) are also Republican. So yes misinformation spreads throughout the public but it is pretty disappointing we have an entire cable news network dedicated to disseminating it and a political party primed to exploit ignorance rather than educate people.

It is easy to sneet at anti-vaccine campaigners, be they in Melbourne, Manchester or Malibu, but there is a real tragedy here-

On 15 September, multiple family members announced that Ms Lowery had died, and a GoFundMe was set up for her funeral expenses.
“My beautiful niece has lost her battle against Covid,” an aunt wrote. “My heart is breaking for her 4 kids ... So many people need her here, but God must have special plans for her in heaven.”

But for a simple trip to a clinic and a vaccination, four children have lost their mother. To call it God's plan is an insult to the intelligence. Was the woman herself and her children vaccinated against Polio, Measles? At what point if ever did someone in the family try to persuade her to do the right thing for herself and her children? It would be easy to write her off as a right-wing nutcase, but where was the woman getting her information from? Vaccinated Tucker Carlson? Vaccinated Donald Trump?

There are too many stories like this of people campaigning against the cause of their own death, there is nothing here to feel smug about, but a lot to raise concern that in a country of well-educated people, ignorance can command such drastic decision making.

I don't usually do this but what about this post do you disagree with Dirkmcgee? We all have emotional reactions to things we don't like to admit are true but is there anything I said that is not true. Fox News runs anti-vax propaganda all day, lying about side effects, downplaying efficacy. Do you think employers mandating vaccination is unconstitutional? A French academic once defined two types of poverty- the Structural, caused by long-established forms of politics and behaviour; and the Conjunctural, poverty as a result of a sudden event such as the loss of property through flooding, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, fire, and so on. Obesity and heart disease are long-established and fatal illnesses that have been part of the US healtth profile for many decades; Covid is thus a conjunctural event that has erupted and requires immediate attention on a scale quite different from Obesity of Heart Disease.

So while you are right to identify some of the leading cause of illness and death in the USA, it is wrong to seek to thereby relegate the 'anti-vaxx' campaigners to some secondary status. As Covid-19 can be described as a conjunctural rather than a structural crisis, the immediate case is presented in simple terms: to prevent a Covid infection which could be lethal, a vaccination is the most rational, and proven method of prevention. While many of the people who were infected and died from Covid-19 had existing medical problems that weakened their immune system, the strength of the virus and its variants has extended the range of victims.

In the US, 44 Million have been infected, more than 700,000 have died.

There is no medical content of value in the 'anti-vaxx' campaigns, it is politics, and bad politics that refuses to engage in debate, that refuses to accept that there is a social dimension to disease that makes individuals responsibile not only for themselves, but for their families and the areas in which they live, work and play.

I am not one of those people who read these stories and say 'serves them right'. These are desperately sad stories because none of the people who have refused to be vaccinated needed to die. It is obvious that none of us can force another to be rational when making decisions, though irrational decisions are often made in an instant and not after careful thought. The arguments that have been made to reject vaccination have for the most part been irrational, while the proof of the effectivenes of vaccine is as clear as day. It is quite shocking, and ultimately sad indeed that families are losing mothers and fathers because of a deliberate decision to reject the truth.

There is nothing to feel smug about in these cases, but a renewed attempt again and again to put the verifiable science before the people to offer them a rational choice that extends life, and does not end it.

Hypothetical: Patient gets admitted to the hospital with a skull fracture and a subdural hematoma after a major car accident. Tests positive with an asymptomatic covid case. Later that night patient has repeated seizures and dies. If you think doctors are putting covid as the cause of death in cases like this you have very little faith in our medical schools.

But I love the arrogance of someone who thinks that scientists and doctors who have spent their entire adult lives studying human disease had not considered something Tucker Carlson said before jizzing on your face (I'm kidding).

Excess death numbers are a good way of allaying this concern. In nearly every country excess death numbers are greater than counted covid deaths. So while there may be the occasional false attribution there is more undercounting of covid deaths. In summary, there have probably been more covid deaths than the 5.5 million that have been reported.

I just want to point out one thing. Omicron has been around for one month out of a 22 month ongoing pandemic. This is the first time substantial numbers of people are being diagnosed with covid when they were admitted to the hospital for other reasons. The fact that doctors are pointing out that many cases are asymptomatic means they are not attributing whatever malady the patient is suffering to covid.

In most hospitalized covid cases the symptoms are not very subtle. People who cannot saturate their blood unless they have oxygen, really bad pneumonia, and kidney failure. Often you hear there is a progression as those who originally went to the hospital needing oxygen are transferred to the icu to be ventilated and then they never make it off of the ventilator.

There is a possibility of a false attribution for any cause of death but you would expect it to be fairly rare if the people are dying of known covid complications approximately one month after their diagnosis. The excess death numbers are a way to provide a check; do our mortality numbers for a new disease correlate with the increased mortality in society. They do...and often suggest undercounting of covid deaths.
