I wonder what it is about a cartoon frog that generates such passion? I had never heard of this green meme before and couldn't care less about it. Pepe doesn't tell me what a President can do to generate economic growth, or provide an education system fit for the 21st century.

What does concern me is that you have an opportunity to explain why a citizen of the USA should vote for Donald Trump on the basis of his 'Positions' but choose not to.

And unless you have been absent from the USA for the last 16 years, you might wonder how the 'alt.right' movement is going to rescue a Republican Party that has lost touch with the average American, which is why the Party has imploded to such an extent that it may lose control of both the Senate and the House in four weeks time.

Dare I suggest you ask how it is that the Conservative Party in the UK has been able to revive its fortunes to become a party of government even as the Labour Party declines into irrelevance, and that it might be due to the Conservatives embracing social issues such as same-sex marriage, abortion and divorce without losing their core support? Immigration remains a difficult subject for the Tories but without the menace and ridicule one associates with Donald Trump as many Tories are quite relaxed about it, Brexit aside. We face some serious problems in the UK right now, and we don't need a green frog to help us understand them.

But perhaps the truth is that you Republicans don't want real power any more, the responsibility is too great. You want to rejoice in the smug illusion that only people like you defend the entitlement of one segment of America to rule the rest, as you claim your founding fathers intended. I used to think there was something unique in the ideology of the alt-right that made it worth distinguishing from neo-nazis and white supremacists. But they do not have any ideas about how to govern. Their main purpose is to attack minorities and claim that doing so is a protest against political correctness.

But you have not offered a 'simple' explanation of your political affiliation. I know and have worked with Germans, none of whom wish to be associated with the failure- the catastrophic failure- of the Third Reich and none of whom consider either the NPD or the AfD to merit a respectable voice. Indeed, it is the association with failure that I find puzzling, unless of course you have a dark desire to always be on the losing side.

On the one hand we should never forget the lessons of history, but on the other hand there are times when we do not need to compare everything today to the Third Reich.

It is a pity that in the US General Election the issues and the personalities under scrutiny are not being judged in the precise context of American history which offers enough comparisons to deal with sensibly than some childish association with the Third Reich about which Erika appears to know nothing, or the sinister campaign by extremists to blame the Jews and any other minority for the 'problems' that exist in the USA. One could argue that Donald Trump has fabricated problems to create a sense of panic that serves his agenda, given that the claims about the American city which he made last Sunday are not borne out in reality, where in general violent crime has been in decline. Chicago clearly has a problem, whereas Boston does not --Trump would do better to ask what is it that appears to be working in Boston that is not working in Chicago? But that requires a level of attention and detail that Trump cannot handle, as he has never had to sit at a desk for 8 hours analysing issues of real importance to millions of Americans.

There is no law that says the US President must be an intellectual, but one does expect the President to express aspirations that appeal to the average citizen, much as one hopes a Prime Minister in the UK would not descend into the gutter to ridicule the disabled to get a vote. In the cases of both Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, there was often a wit and humour in their criticism of their opponents, tactics that now look and sound subtle when compared with Trump's crude slanders. Clearly the crisis in the Republican Party is deeper than we thought, and is not going to be over soon. That cannot be good for US democracy, just as the one-party state has failed everywhere it has been tried, just as the election of a foul-mouthed amateur would create an even larger crisis for the USA as a country.

I think you have to distinguish between those who adopt the 'memes', the slang, and the hand-me-down abuse of the Third Reich just because they know it annoys decent people and their primary aim is to be as offensive as possible, and those American 'White Supremacists' who have probably not delved too deeply into the theories of race on which the Nazi ideology was based, and which targeted Slavs as well as Jews as 'untermensch' and thus candidates for extermination. It would not surprise me if there were Americans of Slav origin in the 'White Supremacist' movement just as there are angry Poles today who adopt the emblems of the Nazis who slaughtered Poles without a second thought.

Somewhere in these confusing, and often childish expressions of impotent rage, there must be some anxiety among some 'White Americans' that their precious country has been 'taken over' by a multi-cultural nightmare in which they become the minority. But if you consider who it was that built modern America, you cannot delete the Chinese or the Slaves or the Hispanics from it, any more than you can delete the Jews, the Christian fanatics and the multitudes of 'white Americans' most of whom accept the changes that they see.
Because for all its problems and challenges, America is not broken, most of its cities are not lawless battlegrounds dominated by gangs selling drugs; most of its multi-cultural citizens get along with each other, work and trade with each other and see no reason to mock them any more than they would mock the their wives and daughters, the disabled, or veterans. There will always be residual problems associated with prejudice of one kind or another. The sad -potentially damaging- thing is that Trump and his supporters have created both an agenda derived from social loathing, and found a crude language with which to express it. If capitalism has changed the way people work, their purchasing power, their feelings of insecurity, government may be the best way to remedy its worst ills, but to achieve that people need to have confidence that government will do just that. Claiming in advance of the election that it has been rigged so that Trump will lose; claiming that 'the media' -which presumably must include the Murdoch Empire and the Shock Jocks are- all 'against him' is designed to separate fact from fiction, and citizens from each other.

The failure of the Republican Party to deal with this near collapse of its national organisation, and its internal divisions has been self-inflicted, it is not happening because of a conspiracy, though Trump will continue to play the Martyr and his supporters will refuse to accept the result, but with consequences we cannot yet predict. One hopes the Sherrif with his Pitchforks and Flames will just swallow his pride and admit they were beaten fair and square, and not head off to Fort Sumter to reclaim an America that was never his to own.

This is a very good point and post. The part I highlighted is true and on white supremacist forums there are frequently discussions about who should be considered white, about whether being aryan is the sine qua non of participation, about the status of Italians, slavs, and southern Europeans. Usually the reconciliation between their professed ideology and their own status is not very thoughtful or principled. They like the ethos and iconography of Nazism but don't want to be constrained by its details. Strangely, the Nazis themselves were sticklers for detail:).

Your last two paragraphs are particularly well said...Republicans must find a way to participate in the political process and articulate a coherent agenda. This election has been defined by the breaking down of norms...norms of behavior intended to ensure our civility to one another.
