Sex in Strange Places -BBC TV series

The BBC is repeating a three-part series, Sex in Strange Places that was shown earlier this year, although I did not know about it then and have caught up with it on the iPlayer. There are three programmes on Prostitution ranging from street prostitution to high class escorting, with one programme each on Turkey, Brazil and Russia. Transexual prostitution occupies most of the Brazil programme and about half the Turkey programme but does not figure at all in the programme on Russia.

The reporter, Stacey Dooley is not on a moral mission, and it is clear that there is a wide gulf between the high class escort in Russia and the Syrian refugees in Turkey but not much difference between the transexuals in Turkey and Brazil both of whom are for the most part shut out of the 'regular' economy and discriminated against in law and in moral terms. The daftest person in the series is the official in St Petersburg who is also a priest who says he wants to cleanse Prostitutes and homosexuals of their 'sins'.

I saw it during it's original run it's a good series i loved both the Turkey and Brazil episodes. Two great countries that need a liberal social revolution when it comes to trans women and "travestis" at least.
In Brazil Trans women can be nurses, masseuses, cleaning ladies and on occasion secretaries which is not much but it's better than nothing. Rio and Sao Paulo have programs to help educate trans people both trans women and men.
This along with a number of trans women running for public office this year in Brazil; I think it's a little unfair to say the subtractions are the same but they do have many parallels for the average trans women but that could be said for anyplace outside of Iran and Thailand.

Of the girls listed i think Indianara Siqueira has actually been in some minor political position before
and now that i'm thinking about it There are about two trans women who work as english teachers as well.

All fair points, as I allowed my comments to be skewed by the theme of the programmes, which is sex work rather than other forms of work. Education has a key role to play in this as does class, and in Brazil colour too.

I watched the Turkey episode last night and plan to watch the other two this weekend . The situation in Turkey looks grim. Hats off to the brave and even handed coverage by the female BBC correspondent.

I searched YouTube for a segment from the 1990s Channel 4 programme Passengers which focused on the Transexuals of the Taksim district of Istanbul, I think the first time they had been filmed for a British audience, but cannot find it or much else from this series.
