When I read the various theories about who could be Shakespeare and got to Marlowe's name I thought exactly the same thing. I've only read the Jew of Malta by Marlowe, but there is no learning curve that gets you from there to any of Shakespeare's works I've read.

If you just compare the plot lines of the Merchant of Venice and the Jew of Malta; in Shakespeare you have a man who has considered every angle and motive to a man in Marlowe who wasn't capable of anything better than a melodrama with elements of fantasy. Then there's the language, an unquantifiable difference, but an obvious one to me.

I realize this is a thread hijack, but I've been meaning to say that about the Marlowe theory myself. Apologies to Rodinuk if you disagree, but had to get my two cents in too.
