Nice story ,well written , thanks Prospero.
You really know how to build a story with subtle shading , it has the feel of a true story . If you added the rain it was a brilliant stroke ,if the rain really occurred you described and used it beautifully to frame the scene.

Thanks for your positive comments. Of course I added the rain sukumvit boy.,. it is a work of fiction. (Obviously some elements were drawn on experience... _) and i await my sternest critic here Stavros to point out which famous short story i was referencing in the final few paragraphs.

Oh , goodie another puzzle . Yes, it did sound faintly reminiscent (but you made it your own).
So my first guesses as to the inspiration for that final scene go to W Somerset Maugham ,"Of Human Bondage " or James Joyce , "The Dead"
