Jimi Hendrix is my all-time favorite hands down.
    Thanks, Carissa

Right, so most people have named rock and blues guitarists (SRV, Gilmour, Fripp et al, so instead of repeating those same names I'm going to take a different tack. Here's classical guitarist John Williams (no relation to the chap who composed the theme music for ET, Star Wars, etc):

In the Eighties, he teamed up with some fellow classical musicians to form the band "Sky":

Definitely a slant towards rock and blues guitarists here, though a couple of folks like Willie Escalade mentioned jazz guitarists--and I concur with Earl Klugh and Wes Montgomery on the jazz side. Also Joe Pass, John McLaughlin, and Larry Corell (the Hendrix of jazz-rock fusion).

There are so many categories, many of which have been overlooked:

    Country (Acoustic) Blues:
Chris Smither (Bonnie Raitt calls him her Eric Clapton)
Rory Block (few women on the list so far as well)
    Robert Johnson (of course)

    American Folk/Acoustic
    Brooks Williams
    Alex de Grassi
    Leo Kottke
    Michael Hedges
    Doc Watson
    Kaki King (another woman)

    British Folk/Acoustic
    John Renbourne
    Davy Graham
    Bert Jansch
    Martin Carthy
    Robert Thompson
    Robin Williamson

    Classical
    Andre Segovia
    Julian Bream
    Manitas de Plata
    John Williams (not the composer)
Charo (don't laugh, she trained with Segovia and is brilliant)

    Rock & Electric Blues
Jimi Hendrix (as brilliant as any and the most innovative and influencial of rock guitarists)
Stevie Ray Vaughn (Hendrix' second coming)
    Robert Fripp
Frank Zappa (Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar)
    Eric Clapton
    Jeff Beck
    BB King

    so many more!!!

Ain't that the truth! I'd like Zappa more if he had ditched the juvenile, lowbrow humor schtick.

Ecstatic, Manitas de Plata is a flamenco guitarist, not a classsical guitarist. While I don't want to belittle flamenco, there's quite a difference between one style and the other, even though one can find some flamenco echoes in some works of Spanish composers such as Joaquin Rodrigo and Isaac Albéniz.

Speaking of flamenco, here's a guitarist that cannot be overlooked: Paco de Lucía.

and with two other of the world's great guitarists:
