Surprised no one mentioned Andrei Chikatilo. That guy was insane even by Russian standards. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrei_Chikatilo

How about some of the more under-appreciated ones like Mary Ann Cotton or the Bloody Benders?

The Bloody Benders were a family of serial killers who owned a small general store and inn in Labette County, Kansas from 1872 to 1873. The inn was a dingy place called the Wayside Inn

The Bender family home had a large room that was divided by a curtain. If a guest appeared to be wealthy, they would give him a seat of honor, with his back to the curtain. Kate would distract the guest, while John Bender or his son would come from behind the curtain and strike the guest on the skull with a hammer. The victim's throat was then cut to ensure his death. The body was moved behind the curtain and thrown through a trap door that led down into a cellar. Once in the cellar, the body would be stripped and later buried somewhere on the property, often in the orchard

And maybe its easier to withdraw from life
With all of its misery and wretched lies
If we're dead when tomorrow's gone
The Big Machine will just move on
Still we cling afraid we'll fall
Clinging like the memory which haunts us all

Edmund Kemper. He didn't kill as many people as some of the others mentioned here but for sheer lunacy, he was tough to beat. His first victims were his grandparents at age 14. When the police confronted him and asked him why he did what he did, he replied that he wanted to see what it was like to kill grandma. Needless to say, he was sent off to the looney bin after that. After his release from the mental institution some five years later, he tried to behave for awhile but as they say, bad habits are hard to break and he began killing young women. He became known as the co-ed killer. Not only did he kill these women, he decapitated them and took them back to his apartment and had sex with them after he did his deed. As for his grand finale, he ended up beating his mother to death. He then cut her head off and had oral sex with it. If that wasn't enough, he ripped out her vocal cords and tried to flush them down the garbage disposal. When the vocal cords clogged the drain he later quipped to authorities it was only fitting since his mother was always nagging him.

Kemper remains incarcerated at California State Prison.

I was thinking of him as I was reading through this also. I read a book called the 100 Most Infamous Criminals of All-Time or something like that when I was deployed and his story stuck in my mind. Good pick Jen.
