Yup , most people have no idea what it means because they have had little or no occasion to encounter it and even less need to use it in everyday writing or conversation.
However , like most 'technical jargon ' it gets bandied about in the context of scholarly writing or discussion , sometimes excessively. But here , in the context of trying to clearly define very specific gender identity roles , I think it's the most exact word for the job.
Certainly people who follow this forum should understand its exact meaning and expect to encounter it with some frequency.
