Re: Las Vegas Lounge
Just back from Vegas, can verify that it sucks now. I had held out some hope that even though the LVL is closed, there still might be some street activity in that area. No such luck, at least during the week, maybe on the weekends.
In general, Vegas is a shadow of its former self. There was an up-side though. I'm a bit of a gambler, certainly no high roller but I'll drop a c-note on roulette or blackjack now and then, and I suck at both but so what. Couple nights ago I was playing roulette in the Sahara casino and one of the senior floormen came up and just started conversing with me - mind you I was one of like 10 people in the whole casino and these were prime hours. By the end of the conversation, which was just the usual small talk between strangers, he ended up comping me a deluxe suite and a very expensive dinner. Normally I'd never get that treatment in Vegas so I assume they are really bending over backwards to impress people right now, or hell, maybe they're just bored. But I thoroughly enjoyed the suite and the dinner.

Re: Las Vegas Lounge
I stayed in the Sahara when I was in Las Vegas -I am surprised it is still there. It was good value in 2007 as the exchange rate gave two dollars for every pound, and though it is now somewhat away from the centre of the 'Strip' and the restaurant wasn't up to much, I won more money on their slots than in any of the other casinos. One in particular, had the Beverly Hillbillies as its visual theme, with the family sitting around a table and the slot action requiring you to guess which diner will get the next pancake, points/dollars awared for the number of pancakes they get. After playing it a few times I realised I could make $60 every session because the sequence was the same up to that point. I was't there long enough to make a lot of money and wondered if they were watching it on CCTV. In any event, I lost $50 in 15 minutes playing Blackjack, so I guess that's why the House never loses, unless the Casino is owned by Trump.

Re: Las Vegas Lounge
The Sahara is a whole new operation now, just re-opened mid-2020 behind a $100 million renovation, which was, of course, started before the pandemic. That's actually the reason I stayed there - I also had some good experiences at the old Sahara, and was interested in what they're doing now (it also didn't hurt that they were waiving resort fees when I booked). I was there Tues, Wed, and Thurs night this past week, the room was shiny and spotless, the suite I got upgraded to was amazing, and my total room charge at the end was 170 bucks! Lucky for them I'm an untalented gambler.
Aside from my roulette and blackjack losses, which were minor, I also dumped $100 into a Willy Wonka machine they've got. I admit I was totally suckered in, the machine has an oompa-loompa feature where the little guys descend on the screen and widen the playing field while adding a lot of wild spaces, and it was so much fun I found myself committed to continuing until it happened again. It didn't.

Re: Las Vegas Lounge
Hmmm Willy Wonka, I am sure there is some Cockney rhyming slang for that, but what are slots for? Other than that I assumed they would just demolish the Sahara, but as it currently looks like I won't have the chance to visit Vegas ever again it is not something I need worry about.

Re: Las Vegas Lounge
I am going to entertain myself by speculating about the possible reasons you will never be able to visit Vegas again, Stavros:
1. You are banned from Vegas for counting cards in 6-shoe blackjack.
2. You robbed a convenience store to account for your $50 blackjack loss and are now a wanted man in Clarke County.
3. They know about your Beverly Hillbillies strat.
4. You've spent all your money on t-girls and are now stuck...wherever you are.
5. Your passport has been revoked due to your political beliefs.
6. Your Witness Protection Program cover has been blown and the Mob is still after you over something that happened in NYC in the 70's.
7. You've got that Bill Murray thing from What About Bob? that prevents you from leaving your own house.
OMG please tell me one of these is correct!

Re: Las Vegas Lounge
Surprised you were able to get a mid week room. Some resort hotels are closed during the week
I also loved the old Sahara. Felt it was the least pretentious of the strip casinos
Gambling in Vegas is like playing in a phone booth. Didn’t stop me from winning $1000 on a corner end video poker machine which wasn’t so claustrophobic.
Love that town and I’ll go back pandemic or no
