strange, i see it exactly the opposite way. i don't consider it boasting, but i definitely don't make it a secret about what i like or i'm attracted to. it's definitely not conversation for polite company, so knowing when to divulge such information (and how) i suppose can also be considered a skill.

when i was growing up, my parents told me the worst thing i could do is hide things. so if i got a porn from a friend, it had to be out in the open. if it was hidden, then it translated as being wrong (or illegal). this was implanted into my brain at a tender age, and has always stuck with me. if i can't freely express something, or have to go out of my to make something hidden, then i have to ask myself why.

I believe calling other people's problems trivial when they perceive them as a big deal is showing a lack of empathy.
