Last year I saw one of the David Attenborough programmes about life on earth, but can't recall precisely which one, where they went into the deep ocean and discovered living creatures where the pressure per inch would burst a human brain, where there was no light, and precious little to eat. In effect, there should have been no life at all. It made me wonder if in the sub-surface of Mars there might be enough water and oxygen to sustain life, and this article suggests it might. The Atacama Desert is one if the driest places on earth owing to the cold Humboldt Current which which runs north along the west coast of South America and causes all the warm moist Pacific air to condense and drop all its rain at sea before reaching the mainland , as well as the high Andes Mountains which force the air up into the high cold atmosphere which repeats the drying process. Home of some of the worlds newest great telescopes due to the dry stable air.
