Officers responded about 2:30 a.m. to a report of shots fired in the 600 block of North Kenmore Avenue, just east of the 101 Freeway (map), according to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department.
The officers found a transgender person suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, the spokesperson said. The victim was transported to L.A. County-USC Medical Center by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel and pronounced dead shortly after 5 a.m.
Authorities had initially described the deceased person as a transgender woman. In a news conference at the scene, an LAPD detective referred to the victim as a transgender man.
“From what we’ve been told by witnesses, it appears … that it may be a robbery gone bad,” said police Lt. Joe Losorelli.
Two to three men, described only as Hispanic, fled the scene on foot after the shooting, witnesses told investigators.
Eastbound lanes on Melrose Avenue were closed at the 101 Freeway as an investigation continued.

Murder of transgender woman caught on camera; suspects sought

EAST HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) --
Surveillance video has been released in the fatal shooting of a transgender woman in East Hollywood early Thursday, and police are asking for the public's help to catch the suspects.

Aniya Parker, 47, was fatally shot around 2:30 a.m. Thursday on the 600 block of North Kenmore Avenue.

On Friday night, mourners, united in their grief, gathered at the spot where Parker lost her life. Those in the transgender community are on edge after one of their own, who they knew as Asia, was shot and killed.

"I can't even come home late from work or something without the risk of being shot in my head, brutally, for my purse or whatever the case may be. It terrifies me," vigil organizer Kerri Secil said.

In the video, Parker is seen turning around after 2-4 suspects say something, then surround her underneath a tree. One suddenly throws a punch and Parker runs off. That's when one suspect fires a single shot, hitting her in the head.

She crosses the street where she sits on the curb, before she suddenly collapses in the street. Parker later died at a local hospital.

Los Angeles police say the incident appeared to be a botched robbery attempt, and the victim was likely not targeted due to her transgender status, but that does little to calm fears.

"This was not a robbery, in fact, they left the purse behind," Mary Zeiser of Hollywood said. "This is a cold-blooded hate crime and this type of violence needs to end."

There are numerous cameras in the neighborhood. Police are now reviewing all the videos to see if they have a clear shot of the suspects.

"We want to get to the bottom of it and we can only get to the bottom of it once these cowards who did this are apprehended, and the good news is that they're on video," Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch O'Farrell said.

Investigators are looking for 2-4 male Hispanic suspects. If you have any information about this incident, you're urged to contact the Los Angeles Police Department at (877) LAPD-24-7.

Aniya Parker and an Epidemic of Violence Against Transgender Women of Color

Mourners in and around Los Angeles are remembering Aniya Parker, a 47-year-old transgender woman who was violently killed in East Hollywood last week.

Parker was fatally shot at 2:30 a.m. on Thursday during what police have reported as a robbery. Surveillance footage of Parker’s death has circulated widely across the Internet, showing two to four suspects surrounding her before one punches her and then shoots her in the head as she tries to flee.

Many observers aren’t buying the police’s assertion that Parker’s killing was the result of a robbery gone wrong. “This was not a robbery, in fact, they left the purse behind,” Mary Zeiser of Hollywood told ABC7 news. “This is a cold-blooded hate crime and this type of violence needs to end.”

Less than 48 hours after her death, Parker’s supporters held a memorial in her honor. Her friends and family are now trying to raise $15,000 for funeral expenses, which include transporting her body back to her home state of Arkansas.

Parker’s death is another example of what seems like nothing short of an epidemic of violence targeting transgender women of color. She’s is the eighth transgender woman of color to be killed since the begining of June, according to the Anti-Violence Project. She’s also the second to be killed in Los Angeles in recent months; 28-year-old Zoraida Reyes’s body was found in a parking lot behind an Orange County Dairy Queen on June 12th. Transgender women of color face disproportionately higher rates of hate violence than other members of the LGBT community, according to researchers. In fact, a 2013 report from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs found that LGBT people of color were nearly twice as likely to experience physical violence than their white counterparts. Transgender women made up 67 percent of anti-LGBT homicides in 2013, according to the Anti-Violence Project.

caught on video:Surveillance video released to NBC NEWS

Surveillance video released to NBC4 by an East Hollywood business shows the moments before the fatal shooting of a transgender woman. Beverly White reports for the NBC4 News at 11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014.

An apparent struggle over a purse led to a fatal shooting Thursday morning in East Hollywood in what authorities described as a "robbery gone bad."

The shooting occurred on Melrose Avenue near the 600 block of north Kenmore Avenue around 2:30 a.m.

The attack involved a struggle over a purse carried by the victim, identified by police as a transgender individual, who was shot in the head. The attackers were walking in front of the victim and waited by a vehicle before the approximately two-minute struggle that ended with gunfire, police said.

The wounded victim then walked across the street to another car and passers-by called for help.

An apparent struggle over a purse led to a fatal shooting Thursday morning in East Hollywood in what authorities described as a "robbery gone bad." Toni Guinyard reports for the NBC4 News at Noon.

A surveillance camera nearby captured the confrontation, struggle and shooting. The video shows the attackers confronting the victim, following her, shooting and then running away.

The attackers did not appear to be specifically targeting a transgender person, Losorelli said. A preliminary investigation indicated the attack was random, he added.

"It appears that it may have been a robbery gone bad," said LAPD Lt. Joe Losorelli.

But the transgender community is on edge after the shooting.

"It's really, really frightening for all of us especially out here on the streets," Karina Samala said.

"Transgender women are targets of violence, disproportionately victims of violence," said Christopher Argyros of LA's LGBT Non-Violence Center.

LGBT leaders in the LA community identified the victim as Aniya Parker.

Parker had a "heart of gold," according to a GoFundMe donation page. The page was set up to help the family to transport Parker's body to Arkansas to be laid to rest.

The attackers are believed to be two or three men in their mid-20s, police said.
