William T. Vollmann is a cross-dresser?

Vollmann is a polymath and very interesting person with wide ranging scholarship and life experience.
I first fell in love with his writing in the '90s , his " Butterfly Stories" , "Whores for Gloria" and "The Rainbow Stories" are amazing tales about S. E. Asian prostitutes including a story about an American sex tourist who falls in love with a Cambodian Bar Girl and follows her into the Killing Fields horror of the Khmer Rouge regime .
Prostitution and the various aspects of violence are recurring themes in his work.
He won the National Book Award in 2005 for , "Europe Central" which explored 20th century moral decisions made by people in testing times ranging from poets to madmen including composer Dmitry Shostakovich to SS officer Kurt Gerstein.

I remember Vollman writing for Soin magazine how he discovered a bar girl who had been pimped out by her rural family. He championed her and bought the family a farm so the daughter wouldn't have to work in sex work

A few years later he returns and finds her working in a bar again entertaining clients

Seems the family was impressed on their daughter's charm to entice a farang to buy a farm for her. Sent her back out to see if she could score any more cash awards from any other westerners
