Nan Goldin
Between 1972 and 1974, Nan Goldin shot black-and-white photographs of her friends at The Other Side, a drag bar in Boston, in her words “to pay homage” to those whose “third gender . . . made more sense than either of the other two.” More on Goldins work here

A friend of mine was working at an art institute in Boston in the mid nineties, and curated an installation that revolved around gender and perceptions of gender. Nan Goldin's work was included, and that book had just been published at the time. My friend got me a signed copy. It's a great book of photography. I can't remember the name of the place, but it was down on Boylston near Mass. Ave., like a block away from the Hynes T station.
