I had two albums by Paul Horn which I loved - Inside and inside II..... wonderfuly mystical stuff. Thanks for the post Sukumvit.

On the album he recorded in the Taj Mahal he used the acoustic and echo to create a very fragile sound world.

    RIP Mr Horn

RIP Paul Horn, one of my musical heroes, from his jazz recordings to his early ventures into "New Age" music (well before most) to his collaborations with folk-rock artist Donovan. Inside was a true breakthrough album, and still a subtle masterpiece. Back in 1971 I saw him backing up Donovan at the Music Hall (now the Wang Theatre) in Boston, and they blew the audience away with their rendition of "Season of the Witch" on acoustic guitar and flute!

Harold McNair was Donovan's flutist and occasional saxophonist in the 60s, but he passed away in 1971. Donovan and Horn were both practicing transcendental meditation under the Maharishi at the time, so it was natural for them to connect. They recorded together and planned to release an album, but it never materialized due to contract difficulties, although some cuts were released decades later in various (mostly bootleg) form.

Paul Horn also played with Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett and others in the jazz idiom.
