Just to add this : staying near Nana you have ez access to both the BTS Skytrain at Nana , Ploenchit, and Asok and the metro underground at Asok. From these fast, efficient , and air conditioned methods of transport you can hit many tourist spots including the river where you can take a river taxi to many spots.

At most BTS stations, you can get a tourist map(free) with the stops and the attractions.

My 2 baht....... I stopped by Khoa Sahn once, it was amusing , i assume this is what 1966 San Francisco may have looked like..55555

If you do head to Pattaya soi LK metro is a busy place right now and generally cheaper than walking street good value bygof beer offers and the like lots of garbage owned bars where u can get good advice of what's going on in town. Pattaya is not everyone's cup of tea but like Ronseal it does what it says on the tin !

it works both ways: the office supervisor who seeks to impress by acting like a CEO and, increasingly, the CEO who tries to impress by acting like a stockboy to mislead others into thinking he/she empathizes with the little people. How you view those people really depends on where in society you fit. For example, I find pseudo-rasta types sporting locks, Bob Marley shirts, Jamaican fashions, smoking weed, and talking peace and love without any understanding of rastafari to be pretentious. Whenever you co-opt someone else's culture to meet your own shallow purposes you're pretentious.

I learned this the hard way! Hadn't ever experienced this firsthand until Bangkok. But I appreciated the experience the first time it happened. Bangkok is a beautiful city.

If I could add a few things, having been in BKK recently exclusively to hunt ladyboys:

    1. They are EVERYWHERE in Lower Suk. Walk around Nana any time of day or night and you'll trip over them. There are two 7/11's in Nana that are a CONSTANT stream of ladyboys coming and going. I can't properly describe how EASY it is to meet and get laid with ladyboys in Lower Sukhamvit.

    2. Make an account on ThaiFriendly.com and specify the "ladyboy" button and flirt with them in advance and arrange to meet them in person. It's easy peesy. Dead easy.

    3. Personally I stayed in Upper Suk, out of Nana. Too sleazy for me. But an easy ten minute walk. Google "ladyboy friendly" hotels. There's a website dedicated exclusively to those kinds of hotels. As mentioned Nana Hotel is scummy. Don't stay there.

    4. Do not approach freelancers late at night unless you are really street wise. They will roast you, and some might drug and rob you. Stick with Obsessions or other places in Nana, and only approach them on the street in the early evening.

    5. Treat them with respect and kindness while holding your guard. As you will see, lots of drunk assholes from all kinds of countries treat the ladyboys like meat to be used and spit out. You'd be amazed how kindness goes such a long way, even in the chaos of Nana.

    6. Never take taxies that are parked. They will rip you off---always.

    7. Use a rubber--all the time! What too many guys don't talk about is how many ladyboys are infected with STD's. Many of the freelancers are drugged out and take big risks (going bareback etc). Be careful.

    8. Khao San Road: Not needed, avoid it. Nana + ThaiFriendly has everything you need to get laid by ladyboys.

    9. Don't meet with Craigslist ladyboys unless you have balls. Lots are scammers (not all!). Stick to take out places in Nana.

    10. Ladyboys endure tremendous suffering in Thailand, because most of them cannot afford to support themselves outside the sex trade, which is really brutal in lots of ways. As a result, most of the ladyboys I met were tremendously kind and humble when met with respect and kindness. It makes them irresistible. You might even fall in love with them, as I did more than once. Have fun. You may never feel the same about your life or your sexuality. Bangkok is paradise if you meet it on its own terms and try and humanize it.

Agree with RDTD as far as it being crowded and sort of noisy and dirty.
Don't know what your budget will allow ,but its going to be a hassle trying to bring a bar girl back to a hostel.
Do yourself a favor and get a cheap ,bar girl friendly hotel in the Sukhumvit Road area between Soi 4 and Soi 24.

Have you stayed in Silom area hon?

I stayed in Dusit Thani Bangkok for $60 a day, a four and plus star hotel after the surgery to recover. It's fabulous. The rate tends to be much higher than this, but you may get lucky to get it this low.

It also needs a key card to access the elevator, but i think if you go together with your chosen lady, you will be fine
