not much shocks me anymore, but at least when the Air France flight went down, we had some idea of what happened...that is, Air France and the tower in Paris knew there were error codes, just not the severity nor ineptness of the pilots.

With this plane, to have no data on it is really quite astonishing.

I'm amazed that it just vanished. Isn't this unprecedented? I'm nervous about flying at the best of times. This'll make me even more nervous.

it isn't unprecedented per se...as i said, the air france flight that vanished in 2009 at least had some warning before it too vanished. it took a few years before they finally found it and the black box.

with this, all data states that there was no issue right before it vanished so, though the air france flight is a precedent, the situations are a bit different.

something or someone on board rendered everyone unconscious and the plane flew on autopilot for hours. What happened? Where did it go? Why?
I'll be pissed if they label this "mechanical failure" , the way they did with crash off Long Island in 1996.

All sorts of speculation. Pilot suicide, China (or N. Korea?) shot it down, terrorism... all sorts. I think they will find it. Just a question of time.
