Same as the up coming World Cups in Quatar and Russia. They should never have happened - but money talks and the IOC and especially FIFA are massively corrupt organizations.

I think the stuff going on can spread more awareness to the LGBT issues going on in Russia.

The growing homophobia in Russia was examined in a devastating documentary shown on Channel 4 in the UK last night called "Hunted' The reporter said the gay people she had spoken to did not want a boycott of the games in Schi because that might worsen things for the LGBT community in Russia. As it is gangs of neo-fascists now hunt gays to beat and humiliate and then film and "out" them.They call it going on safari. It is done with the tacit supprt of the Russian government who have passed atrocious laws which discriminate against these groups and which are set to be worsened once the games are over. The Russian Orthodox Church is also deeply implicated in this developing witchhunt. Russia is not a happy place to be if you are in any sense divergent from mainstream sexuality. One of the right wingers interviewed ssid that if the gay "problem' was dealt with it would be ONE less problem for Russia. One can only assume the other problems they face include the other old enemy - the jews. The church and the right now essentially identify all gays as being paedophile. It is an ugly and deely dpressing situation.

they know that they're backed by the government and the church, so they don't even try to hide their identities. that's the most horrifying thing. and that witch "Ekaterina Zigunova".. she's a right villainess. I think she travels on a broomstick. see her in the video below from 0:46 onwards>>

The sad thing from what I've read and seen is that an anti-gay attitude is so deeply ingrained in Russian society that it's unlikely to change at any time soon no matter how much the rest of the world disapproves. It's much the same with their racism and anti-semitism. And the fact that the government not only condones but actively encourages vigilante action simply reinforces the prejudice. It takes immense courage to be open about your sexuality in Mother Russia.
