Jeez, Turly, I know that. They won only one World Series back in 1924. As for football, see below.

The NFL team started in Boston as the Braves. They were renamed the Redskins, then moved to Washington.

The ORIGINAL Washington Senators (was also the Nationals for a bit) moved to Minnesota to become the Twins. The 1961 Washington Senators expansion team moved to Texas to become the Rangers.

And yes, there WAS a Senators NFL team...although they were short lived. I think I know what I'm talking about.

I stand corrected about the MLB thing. I forgot that their were two teams.

The Senators played in the American Professional Football Association (APFA). The APFA became the National Football League (NFL) a year after the Senators stopped playing in the APFA. So, the Senators weren't in the NFL.

Yes, Sir, there WAS a Washington Senators NFL team!!!! You got me.
But, no, they (Redskins) should not call their team that.
It should be the PRINCE GEORGES GENOCIDE

Washington Pigskins. Use the Lombardi-era uniforms from 1970 (except change the R to a W and remove the feathers). Plus the fans are still called The Hogs, right? Problem solved.

The Washington Redskins helped shape the modern NFL. I see no reason to change the name just to appease the politically correct crowd!!

I bleed Burgundy & Gold, and like most fans I believe the 50 yard line in RFK Stadium is hallowed ground, but if you think about it long enough your conscience has to tell you if you were in an Indian's moccasins, that name is offensive.

To me, Braves on the Warpath, that's the Skins.

Art Monk and Darrell Green have come out saying the name should be changed, and I think once these kinds of problems keep coming up, it's good to be on the side of what's right. Those guys are righteous.

Still, cheering for the DC PCs is going to be tough.
    Fuck Christine Brennan.

THe problem is every poll taken shows 75-90% of Native Americans don't find the name inherently offensive.

The woman who brought this lawsuit against the Redskins franchise lives on a reservation where the all-Native American HS football team calls themselves the REDSKINS.

This is all driven by political correctness and liberal guilt.

It's problematic when society at large is telling other minority groups what they should be offended by.

To me it would be the equivalent of banning album sales of rap artists who use the N-word in their lyrics.

Historically, Native Americans have called themselves 'redskins' and the name in 21st century America only has context as the name of a professional football team.

It's hard to say that it's a racial slur because it's not used to demean or insult Native Americans.

The U.S. Patent Office was right when they said the word could be seen as 'disparaging', but not derogatory or racially insensitive.

When the majority of a particular group says the word's okay, who are we to tell them they're too ignorant to know better??

If you must conceed, get one of the surviving local tribes(Potomacs, Accokeeks, Piscataways) to adopt/bless/sanction the team--like the Seminoles did with Florida State. (Can't believe I'm using Florida State to make a point because I HATE Florida State...but at least Maryland doesn't have to play them any more.)
