Interesting points. I don't doubt that social conditioning at a young age could have some affect on how people express their sexuality. Maybe in some marginal cases, people's interests may change significantly based on traumatic experiences (or perhaps even positive ones). There was a story a while back about a man having a stroke and becoming gay, and there is actually in the clinical literature a story of a different man having a stroke and awakening to find he had become straight. But with a stroke you are talking about massive re-wiring of the brain that takes place after perhaps billions of connections have been shorn. And even in stroke victims this is on the order of probably less than one in a million.

I am actually curious about the role conditioning plays in sexual interest. Its certainly not insignificant and at the same time there must be limits too.

And just for the record, though I thought you made some good points, I have to say I am not sure about the second type you mention. I guess one reason is because it's empirically un-testable. Well, just look to all the cultures around the world that participate in not only homosexual sex, incest, but pedophilia. Would anyone on this board say to themselves, I am sexually turned on by children? Yet if they grew up in a society where this was common practice, I guarantee they could become sexually aroused. This has been shown with a lot of police officers, and detectives who work on child abuse, child murder cases. After years and years of being forced to look at child porn they themselves gain a liking for the material. I am sure if all you handed out in prisons was gay porn...they would watch it. This is why I truly believe sexuality isn't real, human beings can sway whichever direction they want, at anytime.

Like you, I am interested in the subject of conditioning because it offers hope for people who want to learn new things or get rid of malign traits they think they have. I am not that interested in it for sexuality because I don't have any normative views on sexuality except that it should be consensual. There's no doubt that as much technical information as scientists have about how the brain works at a cellular level, they haven't come close to mastering how it works as an organ.
