Naked men climb Central Park tree in protest

It was more than spring fever that drove two people up a tree in Central Park Thursday.

Police rushed to the park about 4:20 p.m. after receiving several 911 calls that two people had climbed a 55-foot Larch near Wollman Rink and were trying to have sex, authorities said.

When officers arrived, the two suspects refused to come down from their perch some 40 feet up the tree, police said.

Emergency Service Unit officers deployed an airbag around the tree as an officer trained in hostage negotiations tried to coax the two back to earth.

One of the two, a 17-year-old man dressed only in a thong, said he wanted to talk to his mother, police said. The other person, 36, wearing only a shirt and described by police as a preoperative transsexual, demanded an apology from the Daily News.

Police said the two were upset over a recent article in the News that they said put them in a negative light.

About 8:30 p.m., police dispatched a cherry picker to the tree and brought down the two. They were taken to Bellevue Hospital Center for evaluation.

Billy Kinnarney, 58, of Harlem, who was riding his bicycle through the park at the time, gave this account:

"There was just two naked men up there. They were naked or pretty much naked. One was a guy, but the other has breasts and male equipment below."

Because Thursday was Earth Day, Kinnarney at first thought the tree episode was part of an observance.

"I was thinking they were tree people, Greenpeace or something," he said.

Police said the two were not immediately charged but could face indecent-exposure counts.
