Some years ago the 'famous' university in which I was working used to publish its data on internet use, creating a comprehensive list of websites visited. The university homepage obviously was off the chart, the most popular sites being newspapers, particularly the Washington Post and the New York Times, on account of the large US student contingent. A patient trawl through the list and the most popular porn sites were 'lipstick lesbians' and 'gay.com'. I don't know if they were able to locate the terminals which accessed these sites, but it did go as far as single hits.

Just as intriguing, Windows7 has a 'jump list' which records frequent visits to websites and stores it on your computer to make your access to HA that much quicker and easier -it sometimes appears as an 'automaticdestinations-ms' file and makes forensic computing a doddle if someone wants to investigate what is on you hard drive. It is technical paper but there is a description of it here, and also a guide on how to delete things, insofar as anything gets deleted...

    Opening paragraph:
    Abstract
The release of Microsoft Windows 7 introduced a new feature known as Jump Lists which present the user with links to recently accessed files grouped on a per application basis. The records maintained by the feature have the potential to provide the forensic computing examiner with a rich source of evidence during examinations of computers running the Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System. This paper explores the type and level of information recorded by the Jump List feature, the structure of those records and the user actions which result in them being updated.

Once you start visiting sites like HA and downloading stuff you have to really know how to dig deep into the substructure of your PC or mac to delete files and links properly. Cookies are child's play. But most visits leave traces. Get a trusted teenager to cleanse your hard drive if you are worried.

I think the point is that recent changes in computing technology makes surveillance that much easier, whether it is an agency filtering emails and website visits using algorithms, or the forensic computing that might be used after someone has been identified as a 'risk' or a 'threat' -makes the phrase 'access everywhere' take on new meaning. I am sure security agencies monitor HA and other porn forums, its not like they have to join in the discussions.

During various parts of the Cold War, homosexuals were seen as security risks in the Federal Government. You might disagree but spy agencies tend to see somebody's sexual appetites as a possible weakness to exploit.

The NSA is a spy agency......
