I think you've really got to understand and appreciate the artistry of the game, as well as the strategy. The game really is beautiful when it is played well... but then again, it can be a snore-fest when it is not. I think it is easiest to appreciate soccer when:

    A. kids trying to dribble and kicking anything that moves
    B. professional on a world-wide stage

High school, college, even most (US) MLS soccer is not all that entertaining to watch because most players don't have the skill sets developed to make the game beautiful.

When the skills are there though and you've got a talented team, there are few other sports that are just as artistic and stylish as soccer is, imo.

you have to have grown up with a sport or have played it, I think.
it must be terribly boring to watch golf when you don´t play the game but it is fascinating once you know how difficult it is to play well!

the fact that a world championship soccer is one of the biggest mediatic worldwide sportevents as is the champions league in europe should mean something!

    Bollocks.
For all you out there who love to complain when Americans, and certain others, call “Football”, “Soccer”, you should know that it was the British that invented the word and it was also one of the first names of what we now primarily know of as “Football”. In fact, in the early days of the sport among the upper echelons of British society, the proper term for the sport was “Soccer”. Not only that, but the sport being referred to as “Soccer” preceded the first recorded instance of it being called by the singular word “Football” by about 18 years, with the latter happening when it became more popular with the middle and lower class. When that happened, the term “Football” gradually began dominating over “Soccer” and the then official name “Association Football”.

In the USA, it's promoted as soccer.
When you say Football in the USA, the NFL immediately comes to mind.
here in New York we have the RED BULLS soccer team and the league is called MLS, Major League Soccer

Chile deserved to win, but 2-0 flatters them. And I think England learned more from this than Chile did.

On English TV they made Alexis the man of the match. BEFORE he scored his second goal.

We knew they are a good side but there are positive things we can take from this game going forward.
We played well, closed them down for much of the game and had we taken our chances the score would have been different so there are positive things we can take from the game going forward.
We not happy to lose but we learned a lot tonight that we can take from the game going forward.
We are a young and evolving side and there were positive things in the game that we can take going forward.
