Oh,no, I can absolutely assure you that she definitely is making a considered statement. For a society girl from rural Ireland, who was educated in a convent, any ink would be a statement; having it head to foot is a major one. (As a matter of fact, everything she does is a statement, but that might be a little too much for you.)

However, you do not know her and therefore are totally unqualified to pass comment on her actions or motives.

As to your broader suggestion, implicit and badly defined though it is, that being tattood has become a symbol of group conformity rather than otherwise, well, that has always been the case and remains so, but it is completely dependent on the culture and peer group. In some cultures, wearing tattoos is obligatory; in others it is reviled. Even if you were able to prove that wearing ink were universal amongst Americans under the age of 35, this would still be less than ONE PERCENT of world population. To make the kind of assertion you did on such a small base is silly.

Just because something has a specific meaning in one peer group means nothing outside that group or culture. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked.

Most tattoos in general are awful though. People get the most uninspired generic cheap designs (If you have tribals or kanji chances are you have awful taste) plastered over their body and they usually have no depth or interesting meaning to them. I'm not against getting a tattoo personally, but I can't think of anything I would want permanently stained on my skin. And there are certainly people with cool tattoos that are admirable, but it's a rarity.
