I was a computer science major in university, and hung out with a bunch of English majors. The arguments they had over gerunds and the use of the words "of" and "with" were fierce, and I didn't understand a lick of it. I have probably used the word "of" in the above sentence incorrectly, but there you go. It is not that I don't understand syntax, it's just that I understand syntax of languages like BASIC, C, C++ and Assembler.

If you fuck up the syntax of a C program, it doesn't compile. If you fuck up the syntax of an English sentence, as long as it isn't egregious, people still have a good idea of what you mean. The former means Computer Science teachers have to teach syntax well or they've accomplished nothing; the latter means that English teachers can get away with doing a shitty job of teaching grammar.
