This ABC experiment on race dynamics is easily the best thing I've seen on television in years. The result blows my mind, and at 1:50, I literally yelled, "You've got to be kidding me!" at my screen. Let me know if you do, too.

I know everyone gets uncomfortable talking about race, but it would be great if people were more aware so they could challenge their own preconceived notions. You sharing and tweeting this could go a long way toward doing that. Totally your call though.

I seen this show many times. I always think it's biased in some ways, purely for entertainment. Like for instance they say they dress in a similar way, but really it's way different. They pick a Caucasian guy that has long hair and a ball cap like a typical skater look, so it's not surprising he would have a bike. The African American guy they pick clearly has sagging pants which correlates to prison pants, instantly triggering a criminal view of the person from the start. The African American person they got also talks in slang, where the Caucasian in this experiment doesn't. The Caucasian also remains cool while talking while the Afircan American starts with "Uhhh....".

These are very subtle remarks, Lily! I had not noticed, but you're right.
This being said, I think there is obviously prejudice against "visible" minorities. Someone with a more accentuated skin pigment will always get more trouble in any situation, and especially with the law (and more of course in some places than others) than someone with a paler one...
As racial profiling is concerned, I think it's wrong in general. I think the very use of the term "race" is silly, and only used to harm. Police description can involve skin tone description, but tagging someone as being "black" is shitty in itself. Besides, it's so stupid, in the end, to refer to people with colors. I mean, people are not "black" or "white" or "yellow" (btw, I think this one is probably the most ridiculous) or "red"; give me a f** break!

Anytime you see someone you profile them. It's impossible not to; otherwise, you would be a robot or something. The first few sec you see someone you make a judgement in your subconscious of the person based on, clothing, skin, communication, attitude, etc. Unfortunately, the African American ethnicity stereotype is very visible in this video. If you ask me the creator's of this experiment are the real racial profiler's.

Yes, I thought that, and you have put it very well. I would add that the black kid is also being more deliberate in his actions, and gets further with riding it away.

I wince every time people claim there's no racial or sex bias. There have been times where I have gotten away with things that I should have gotten in real trouble for and there is no doubt in my mind that the reason is because I'm a white girl. I'm going to stop before I go off on a rant about people being blind to how society disadvantages people.

Pretty soon the census form will have over a 100 boxes to put ourselves into. Maybe someday our government will let us make choices on people by the content of their character.
