Kalki Subramaniam, was assaulted on June 2, after being followed by two men, in her home city, Auroville India. I have seen several vids of her on YouTube from various televisions appearances.

India sounds like its becoming a continually worse place, which isn't saying much as its always had one of the highest poverty rates in the world.

I am sad to hear about this... but I wonder if she was attacked specifically because of her transgender identity or just because she was a woman?

Unfortunately it happens so often, everywhere. My fiance was assaulted, had several bones in her hand broken which required surgery and pins. Because she was a TG and a TG activist. Cops know who the assailant is, there was even a witness, but never a charge laid by police.

I don't have any direct confirmation of this, but she should have been well known in her community. So to me, it was likely that she was targeted. The assault was also sexual. She was even the the star of a feature length film, named "Narthagi". It was fictional account of the life of an Indian transgender, (often called hijra's).
