Strange how much it reminds of the Christian representations, isn't it? The Great Vehicle is pretty far from the original teaching of the Buddha...

There is a great description of the impact of such a vision of hell on the medieval mind in "The Name Of The Rose' by Umberto Eco, but the very best literary evocation of the Christian terror of hellfire is, surely, in "A Portrait of The Artist As a Young man" by James Joyce.
