    He might not have. And it doesn't seem staged. No one else is doing the same. Some people have that kind of courage, even facing death.
    I like to think this man did, defied death and unspeakable evil. To me, he's an unknown, especially inspirational figure. Like so many others must have been in these "death camps", forever unknown to us.

    this is correct. the picture was taken for propaganda in minsk. there was a british soldier called horace greasley who claimed to be the prisoner, but the photographer identified the prisoner as a russian soldier
