Just curious why does Latin America and parts of Asia have a disproportionate amount of TG/Ladyboys to the rest of the world? There are certainly some LBs (talking about Asia here) who see it as a route to fame and fortune. This is particularly the case in Thailand. Once they either have enough money or run out of looks, LBs often go home to Isan or wherever they came from, and revert to being male because it is more socially acceptable. On the other hand, a good many go for SRS and seek a husband.

In the Philippines there is less scope for LBs to make money in the sex trade, but LBs there are notorious for not taking hormones, with the result that by the time they are 30 any semblance of femininity has gone, and they often revert to being gay or bi men (these terms have slightly different meanings in Asia from the West.)

As to what proportion these make up of the total, nobody will be able to give you a definitive answer, because no statistical research has been done.

Regarding acceptance, LBs and gays are not at all well accepted in the RP but there sure are a lot of them. In Thailand, Buddhist teaching protects them to a degree but they are still marginalised. In Cambodia they are not well accepted either, though maybe a little less stigmatised than in RP.

Many countries which have very strongly defined male and female stereotypes, tend to also have more transgendered (too many reasons to go into right now) so countries like Latin America and Asia, are part of that.

Asia has always had a lot of boys who became girls, back through the centuries there are evidence of them. Thailand's seeming acceptance of them (again too many reasons to go into whether they are very accepted or not very right now) means it's very easy for those with feminine tendencies to become girls, even if they're not true transsexuals. It's not always (rarely in fact) purely for sex work and you'll find many ladyboys working in many different jobs in Thailand.
