Nothing strange at all about using the term 'oriental' here in the uk

'Asian' over here generally means 'Indian/Bengali/Pakistani/Sri Lankan' and Oriental refers to 'Chinese/Japanese/Thai/Vietnamese/Malaysian/Korean/Indonesian.....etc' who would still be considered as 'Asian' but the term 'Oriental' being used to distinguish them from Southern Indians

What does seem strange to me is that in the US, Indians or Pakistanis arent regarded as 'Asian', despite the fact that that particular landmass forms a significantly large part of the continent known as 'Asia' ??!!

Is that just the world renowned general American ignorance of geography and culture outside of their borders in evidence here ?
