Arguing with someone on the internet is like playing chess with a Pigeon, no matter how good you are at chess, the pigeon is just going to knock over the pieces, crap on the board and strut around like its victorious.

It may not change who you are arguing with, but there are many more who may look and learn some logic from one, or the other. It becomes part of the public discourse on any particular subject. I think it's been good for me to hear others with more conservative views. It helps me to better understand what is important to me. And then you get others with your own viewpoint, who may bring a fresh approach, or supporting statistics.
