    Celia, a Slave - 91 edition

    by Melton A. McLaurin

    ISBN13: 978-0380719358
    ISBN10: 0380719355
Summary: Celia was only 14 when she was purchased by John Newsom. On the journey back to his farm, Newsom raped the young girl, beginning a horrifying pattern of sexual abuse that would last for years. Finally she confronted him, struck him fatally with a club, was brought to trial and eventually hanged. An important addition to our understanding of the pre-Civil War era. The author attempts to reconstruct the life story of Celia, a Missouri slave who killed her sexually ab ...show moreusive white master, Robert Newsom. She was hanged in 1855. "McLaurin juxtaposes the story of Celia's inquest and trial, extending from June to October 1855, with the {debate} . . . over attempts to legalize slavery in Kansas Territory. . . . At a time of such national turmoil over slavery, Judge William Hall, a Democrat with strong Unionist feelings, was determined to show that a slave like Celia could receive what he considered a fair trial. But {the author argues that} the Kansas issue inflamed Missouri politics in ways that may have worked as much against Celia as in her favor." (N Y Rev Books) Index.

In the real world it is morally wrong to kill slave masters, because murder is morally wrong, as well as being a crime in most countries, as it was in the USA in the 19th century. It is surprising that you should even ask the question, which veers away from what began as your focus on a politically 'conservative' attack on Tarantino, which you prefer to Spike Lee's presumably because his agenda makes you uncomfortable--?

    In films, anything is possible.

There's not much depth to Spike Lee's criticism of Tarantino other than he finds it offensive that Quentin use the N-word liberally in many of his films.
The N-word is still a Black thing for some Black folk. And Tarantino ain't Black.

ALso Spike is probably a little jealous of Tarantino cinematically since Quentin is still viewed as an auteur in some circles and Spike Lee lost that label in the late '80s.

Modern conservatives still want to believe slavery is the paranoid invention of a victim class in America. The last thing they want to see dramatized in a movie are some of the more peculiar realities of American slavery.

It goes without saying that Fox News' criticism of the movie is missplaced. If they want a more sympathetic portrayal of slave owners, they'll have to wait for a different director to support such a waste of energy.

What surprises me about Spike Lee's criticism is that there is no logical basis for it. What would be the response to a movie portraying the horrors of slavery in which the slavemasters had some compunction about using racial slurs? Imagine slavemasters who were kindhearted and whose actions were put in the best light? Would this not be a grave insult to the suffering of millions under the institution of slavery? It would be tantamount to a denial of that legacy.

He also seems to indicate that Tarantino has a fetish for using the n word, but whatever ammunition he has with Tarantino's other movies vanishes when discussing even a highly fictionalized slave story (obviously a historical backdrop). You cannot any more portray slavery without racial slurs than you can portray the Holocaust era without having Nazis use words like parasite and vermin. Such words were an essential part of the vocabulary of the oppressing class. To what end should that be sanitized?

    NOTE!
    P.S.
Tarantino made the movie to entertain people not for historical accuracy.

I imagine Tarantino still wants to maintain some elements of authenticity respecting the historical context that serves as the backdrop for the movie.

Even for the objective of entertainment it doesn't aid the endeavor to have Nazis (as in Inglorious Basterds) or slavemasters without menace. It's neither entertaining nor accurate.

Moreover in many posts you seem to be using the movie as the basis for evaluating the morality of behaving in ways similar to the characters in Django. As such you don't pay proper heed to your admonition.
